Thread: Brian's First Blade

It looks like, and this is unless I get Charlie's budget grinder v2 built in a decent amount of time, I will partially hollow the french point, and wedge the smile.
I'm not a honer so I have a question; Can someone describe how honing a wedge is different than a hollow? I understand the angles and everything, but does a wedge really need the entire top layer of metal taken off over the entire blade every time it's honed?

Thanked: 1936When honing a hollow ground razor you remove much less steel than on a wedge. When I receive a wedge to hone, I typically hone with two layers of tape & have had to go to three and even then I am spending a bit of time on the lower grit stones. Another thing is if you have a strop that has a lot of draw/drag, you will find a wedge more challenging to strop.
"Should the entire top layer of metal taken off over the entire blade every time it's honed?" That is the theory, but I have yet to see one that was honed that way.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.

Oh. Gotcha. Thanks Shooter.
How do you feel about honing a smiling wedge or a near wedge square/French point............Last edited by medicevans; 09-19-2011 at 07:37 PM.

Thanked: 1936How do I feel about honing wedges...I don't want to turn you away from making your razor. I won't hone them for "customers" if that will answer your question. It can take hours to set the bevel on one wedge. I average somewhere around 4-5 hollows per hour. I think I may even have a couple of wedges without scales sitting around, but they are destined to be hollowed once I get my drive wheel in for my new grinder.

Maybe that's the reason wedges went out of style?
Another question real quick.....What keeps the bevel from getting HUGE on a wedge? One or two pieces of tape won't do it will they?

True wedges always seem to have large uneven bevels.
It looks like everything is coming along fine.
I just set the bevel on a stubby near wedge and it took about 3 hours between a dmt and chosera 1k.
BTW, I have a Brian Brown stub with a long blade (3 5/16") and find it a great shaver, among my best.

Guess what I got back???
I have a lot of cleaning up to do of the profiling, and even more of the actual cutting surface. Should be "fun."
