This lonesome African has managed to collect, at today's exchange rate, $130.

I didn't picture Canadians as particularly competitive, except in easygoingness, which would be a fairly major dichotomy.

With the exceptions of [ice] hockey, maple syrup, and apologizing, that mostly tends to be true. My favourite definition of a Canadian is someone who is neither for nor against apathy.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Competitive apologising sounds like good if slightly cringe worthy entertainment

This reminds me of a time I heard mention of the Canadian Air Force (it was either joint drills with the U.S., or they escorted a wayward commercial jet). I recall a conversation about it...

"Huh... you mean they have F-16's `n stuff, too? I just always thought the only Air Force they had was the Canadian Geese . ...At least they are already pro's at flying in formation .... "

Now let's not have a big conversation about Canadians and us apologizing, Mike Myers, or hockey...let's try to....stay on....
