Plus, on a feature like that, the default should be 'OFF', and if you desire notifications, then turn it 'ON'.....not the other way around.
.....piss me off.

Thanked: 5Well I'm not sure how long you have to be inactive before you get one of these messages, but I really don't see this as a huge problem. On a scale of 1 to 10 of bothersomeness I'd maybe put that at a 3 or 4. I think 5 or 6 would be inconvenient, 7 would be PITA, and 8+ would be "Leave me alone!"
The email itself is like one sentence long. You don't even have to open it...Just read the sender and delete it with the rest of your spam. The delete button is one click away and as Scorpio said, you can turn it off (though it SHOULD be off by default).
His response was both helpful and apologetic. I don't see how you can hold it against him.
I donate blood on a regular basis and it's the Canadian Blood Services policy to phone you two days before your scheduled appointment. Even though I have it marked down and will not forget, I say "Thank you very much for the reminder. I'll be there" and not "Who do you think you are?! I'm a grown man and can make decisons on my own. I don't need you to remind me to donate blood! I'll donate if and when I feel like it! Just for that, I'm never donating again! You guys are so desperate for my blood, it's pathetic!"
Besides, you probably aleady shut the feature off or else you'll keep getting messages.
This could of and should of been dealt with peacefully on your own outside this forum instead of using it to talk down another forum. I find this entire thread to be insulting to a forum who's only trying to accomplish the same goal as us, spread information about shaving. A bad response to a less than pressing problem and one that is easily rectified.
If you leave TSD then that's your choice. A good chunk of the information is probably old-hat to you anyways.
I guess I have other things to worry about than getting into a huff about an occasional email that is meant to be well-intentioned
Besides, not everyone has a super-fabulous forum of 3000+ great members.
Whatever...

Well im a member of The shave den as well and have gotten this same message before. I dont think its a matter of being desperate but as many have said an automatic response for inactive users. That being said its very unprofessional and it should stop.

It's standard marketing practice these days. Not saying if that's wrong or not, but it's no different from companies who send out catalogues. I myself have received many of these types of emails from companies I've bought products from (including Trumpers!). Businesses do it, even charities (as we see in the example above) do it. Why not forums?
The company I work for sends these messages on occasion (once every two years or so) to past customers who have been inactive for an extended period. If we receive no response, those records are often archived in the database, i.e. marked as do not mail, since the recipient has clearly moved on. So it's also a way of tidying up your database and basic admin as well.
Personally, I don't like these sorts of communications, but I have to work with it in my career, and I accept it in my personal life. Some of the worst offenders are charities, who will go to extraordinary lengths to get your attention and response (at least in the UK they do). I find it irritating, but it's so widespread these days.

It can also be used to see if they have an active e-mail address. I,m not saying tsd sells e-mail address, but I bet some sites do. Companies pay well for validated e-mail address's, so they can send you more spam.

Lynn,
I'm sorry. I didn't mean SRP has sent messages, simply that the default for administrator delivered notifications is set to YES by default here as on most groups. We manually must choose NO if we didn't want to receive anything.
So, if we did send e-mails as Shave Den did everyone here who did not change their default setting would automatically get these mails just as you did from SD.
Most groups seem to default that way so members don't miss important news. Luckily we don't randomly send off mails as they did.
