    Default 28 newby

I'm 28 and just started shaving with a straight and DE. I got into this because it was getting way to expensive to shave with those disposables, $15 a pop is nothing to play with.

I also got tired of the bumps and redness the disposables gave me. The bumps have almost fully dissipated and now the only redness I really get is right after I am done shaving, before the redness would last a lot longer if not all day.

I wish I would have known about this earlier but my dad only used disposables and my grandparents I do not think own any straights or DE's so I was out of luck on knowing about this pleasure till just recently.

    Congrats and welcome.

I'm 72 - watched my grandfather shave with a straight when I was young(er)...then got my first straight razor shave in Tiawan in 1957 and have enjoyed straight razors since then....

    Default older I guess

I'm 22 and started about 18months ago with one skinning knife that I thought was so sharp I could shave with, was mistaken but eventually got it sharp enough to what I then thought was a comfortable shave (such a misguided youth was I) and my missus bought me a cheapo off ebay 'samurai' brand, terrible shave so I decided to lash out a bit and my first real razor was a dovo stainless 5/8 olivewood ^_^ and now I've got like 5 more of the buggers, plus 2-3 that need a little TLC before their next shave.

63 years old. Started with straights in Viet Nam in 1966 because could not find razor blades. I quit for several years but started back with the str8 a few years back & am really enjoying. This website is certainly a big help!

    Hello Gentlemen,

Interesting post here. And as I've done my share of wondering about this subject It only makes sense to add myself to this list.

I'm 21 and have been shaving with a straight for almost two years now. I got interested in straights primarily because I desperately wanted to achieve an irritation free shave. Shaving for me had turned into somewhat of a painful exercise and to be frank I hated it. Naturally I wanted to find out how to fix this problem.

I gravitated towards straights because like many of you, I have come to despise the cheapness which is often a product of our throw away culture. Also I enjoy the seemly mundane things of life which often times can be transformed into extremely rich and satisfying pursuits. The Simple activities that contribute to our experience of life are often also the ones which bring us the most enjoyment. A cup of coffee, the evening shave, superb literature. I enjoy the chance to slow down an savor these things.

There is so much more which has contributed to my becoming a straight razor shaver but there is neither time nor space to say it here.

Best of luck to all of you.

    Matthew,

    I'm 47,
Acquired my first straight in my late 20's, tried it a few times, didn't like it then put it away for the next 8 years or so.
My fascination came from the fact that my grandfather was a barber in Glasgow and used them routinely. Took me ages to get the technique down.

I'm 20, doing more saving than shaving, shouldn't be too much longer before I get my first straight and can dispose of my disposables.
