I really like palm honing, so I got 6x2's. I like 5" better, but there's a point where you hit diminishing returns.

They are pretty flat - woot!!
Looks like a nice setup. I personally hate the oil though. The container is messy and just squirts out way too much oil and what not. I like using the sewing machine oil better and the nozzle makes for cleaner usage.

I think I am about to get one of those primitives. They have two in stock in black one is 4-5 inches and 15 bucks and the other is 6 or so and 25 bucks.

Nice - have a look at knifecenter, they had Dans arks on sale. It would have been cheaper to buy them from knifecenter than dans lol. Last week at least.

    yup - still on sale.

Small price to pay, well, unless those are brand new purple belts or something. I always get my belts at a flea market because I do something like what we're talking about with them before I wear them out on wood, or I don't use them for a while and then the tape joint dries out and they separate.

I keep cheapie aluminum oxide belts for oilstones because they're awfully hard on belts.

When I get a vintage arkie that's way out of flat (like very hollow), I use the hard metal drum on the belt sander to dig it close to flat before lapping - keep that in mind. If you have a belt that feels a little beat, it'll still work doing that for a long time (wear a dust mask when doing that, of course, else it's too much silica-ish things for lungs). oilstones on a belt sander smell like fire, strange smell.

So I have been working on my Black since Friday. Just for the heck of it, I ran a blade over it today before shaving.

I only have one days of growth so it doesn't take much but - it was pretty smooth. Kind of shocked really.

They are, to me, as good as anything else once you learn to condition them (fine stones fine, and coarse stones with a little bit of bite). Nothing more durable, either! You can boil them if you want, and they sure wear slowly.
