    Default Shoobie Doobie Asagi

A while ago I picked up a Shoubudani Asagi from Max at JNS.
I finally got around to lapping this bad boy last weekend. What a chore that was, even with the D8XX. This thing is hard, very hard...I think my DMT was scared...It took a good while, Two corner's were low, and remain unlapped, but it won't interfere with honing....Anyway....

The hone itself is an awesome finisher on it's own. I took a DD GE that was beginning to pull and tug. An experienced shaver would be able to shave with it, a novice would have difficulty. I decided to give it a go on the Shoubudani Asagi I got from Max. This is one big chunk of rock, nearly 8x3, and almost an inch thick. It came with a slurry (Tomonagura) It's ideal for using the Nagura progression. It's hard enough....

Once I got it lapped, I took it up to 1000 grit sandpaper. You really need to with these hones. The surface is smooth as glass and has sparkles in it. It's really quite nice to look at. I guess you have to be a rock hound to appreciate it. I'll get around to using the Nagura Progression on it, Botan, Koma, etc...

It excells as a finisher, I did 5 sets of lapps. It doesn't give up slurry easily, but it can be coaxed. My first set of ten x strokes were sticky, stuttery, like lot's of Asagi's. It turned out to be too wet. After I figured that out, I did 15 circles down the hone, 10 more x strokes, and another 15 circles, diluting as I went, and finally finished up with 10 lapps, just water...

I stropped her up on TM's horsehide strop, The blade was just amazing, reallly, really, smooth, very keen, but not irritating. A very nice shave...Kudo's to Max at JNS....I highly recommend the Shoubudani Asagi.
Here are some pics, Of course the Kanji went away during lapping....

I had a goldedge like this. I miss it, I want another one, but with the square point....
And I want a rock like this too, even though I'm a bit too lazy to actually use it

I know what you mean, I've had it for a while now, I was dreading lapping the thing.

Wheeee!! Congratulations on a beautiful stone. Shoubudani, Nakayama, Narutaki Mukaida, Oozuku, Okudo are the five famous Eastern quarry stones (Higashi-mono) known for their fineness and cutting ability. Yay.
I have some new J-nats too. We are going to try them out tomorrow night at our KC meet-up. Pics to follow soon afterward.

Lovely stone there Zib. How about a shot after lapped and wet?

I too, just bought and received my second JNAT. Nakayama Namito Kiita Maruichi, from a different vendor. Lapping was a pain. I only intended to lap the stamps, but the edges chipped. Lap some more. Almost there - another edge chips. There were also several rough hewn edges that needed attention. I figure I lapped...$50 away down the drain easy.

When a piece would chip off, I glued it with CA and let it dry and then lapped it again.

I was down to 600 grit when another tiny piece chipped off. More CA, more lapping, more $ down the drain. I am almost there.

Had to step away from it. I spent 10 hours over two days - lapping.

Anyway, the CA seems to be great at coating these stones. Any thoughts guys?

The stone was listed as medium/hard. It was not the hardest one to lap for me but it was not easy. My Nakayma Asagi is harder and finer.

The slurry is a nice light Grey Poupon color.

My first real razor is also now on the way. A DD GoldEdge. I can now quit torturing the $5 Campbell.

I have spent thousands on hones, in no small part, thanks to you nuts. It's all yours fault. If I have never found this place, I could have bought a pile of triple edges that would have been passed on to my great grand children.

I am glad to have the GE on the way. Now I can concentrate on...more rocks. Thanks enablers!

It sounds wonderful, I am glad you see it paid off! Maxim definitely wouldn't steer you wrong.

May you Shoodoobie while you finish your edges!

Not sure if this was your problem, but if you gently chamfer edge before you lap you might not get edge chips.

What is "CA" ? Here are pics of them dry and wet. I've included two Nakayama Maruichi Asagi. The one with the stamps, also has a "Maruka" stamp, which is bearly visable anymore, but I do have a nice pic of it. The are softer than the Shoubudani, but equally good finishers....

    Enjoy

    Shoobie Doobie = 13 letters.

    Shoubudani = 10 letters.

    What?
