I stopped by Wal-Mart today and checked the pillow section. The only foam they had was the stuff you roll out over your bed. That seemed way too thick. I wandered over to the tool section to see if maybe there was a suitable box, but I didn't much care for what I was seeing. I'm waiting for the battery of my Dremel to charge right now, I got a couple of really cheap tackle cases and I'm in the process of cutting away the plastic dividers to make room for the 8x3 stones:

I should be able to fit 2 of those smaller boxes in my current hone chest. The larger one with the slurry stones is going to have to ride separate I guess. Not half bad for less than $4 a box, and the required modification is minimal.

Keep in mind the Home Depot,,, after they unpack major appliances for the floor displays, they toss the remains out back. You can often get the high grade dense Polyurethane Foam there,,, hiding in the boxes.

Just don't get caught after closing behind the Home Depot, the cops ain't gonna believe your hunting for foam.

The Plano box on the far left has my Guangxi hone, as well as it's slurry stone, and the slurry stones for my Lynn Melynnllyn and Dragon's tongue. To the right of that are my Norton 220/1000 and 4000/8000. Next to that is the Welsh Slate with it's slurry stone, LM hone, and above them the Dragon's Tongue. Everything here accept for the Plano box fits inside the All American tool box behind them.

I got lucky at work today and found an old box for a headlight lens that was stuffed full of that stiff white 1/2" packing foam. Needless to say that came home with me, though I don't have a need for it right this minute.

It's not all that big, so there was only room for the bare necessities
Here's what I was able to fit in:

    Y/G Escher
La Dressante au Bleu, natural combo Coticule
    Nakayama Maruka Asagi
    Shoubudani Asagi
    Oozuku Asagi, travel size
    DMT 325, 8" by 3"
    Chosera 1-5-10K
    Sigma Select II, 13K
    Suehiro Gokumyo 20K
    Norton 4/8K combo stone

I will be making one or two more, one for kitchen knife honing and one for all the other naturals I have.

Anyone else out there who have done something similar or have other solutions for this?

I realize some of you don't have Gun Stores in your area, but, GUN Stores have cases with the foam already in them for low prices, a shorty GUN container will hold a lot of material for the $$.

Thought about it, but I lost the foam that was in my plastic gun cases...which kind of renders them useless for their intended purpose

My mule would surely balk at such a load as some of you folk carry when a travelin about. Here is my hillbilly padded hone travel kit. I am still trying to iron out the particulars cus the sock don't come with no instructions.
