I think it will be best to get the opinion of another person who can hone and with different stones. Getting that opinion will probably be the fastest and best way to understand what the problem is. I'm glad to help if you need it.
Good luck!

It would seem the hone you are rating at 1k from the garage sale is pretty aggressive from the pics. My thought is going from DMT to a 220 or similar is compounding the issues. Invest in a 'known' 1k. Kings are cheap. Just a thought here. It may explain a lot........

Thanked: 3215No, no, no, my friend, that stone is way too aggressive, probably in the 200 grit range. Are any of your other stones high grit synthetic stones?
If you used that stone with pressure, you have damaged the edge and it will have to be removed on a real 1k stone, you could use a good 4k.
How about a photo of your 2k? And tape the spine… at least until you learn to hone, you are needlessly grinding away the spine, you can never put steel back on…

Maybe I didn't read this thread too carefully but other than the DMT you used. I did not get any real identification of the actual stones you used to try to get your razor into shape. The picture of the so called 1k looks quite rough as others have said. I wouldn't compare that to even a Norton 1k which I think is on the aggressive side, it looks closer to the 220 tbh and if you have a razor that is prone to chippiness, I think maybe you should find a softer 1k stone. The king might just fit that bill. Yes its still a mystery what is happening but I think someone should put that razor through some of the more tried and true honing progressions and see if something can come of it before we say its just a bad hunk of steel.

for the hone i posted, i'm using it with water. For my other razors while i honed them for first time. Usually it's all first stone (not after DMT). After 20 or 40 passes i see their bevels are ok.
this is my 2k,

Thanked: 3215Is the 2k a natural stone?
If you are buying from EBay, you cannot trust the grit rating sellers list, most are not even close.
If they are Natural stones, they cannot be grit rated, as each is different in composition and can vary wildly in performance.
You can use a Carborundum stone but it must be a very fine one. Norton made some very fine stones that work well for razors, the 100 series can still be purchased for just a few dollars.
Here is a posting from the SRP library on Carborundum stones.
You probably have damaged the edge with the aggressive stone you have been using and the diamond plate, you can remove a bit of the edge to get to good steel and set the bevel on a higher grit stone, possibly your “2k” stone.
Are any of your stones, razor quality synthetic stones? Perhaps a photo and brand names will help us advise you.
Razor honing is much different from knife sharpening and the stone must be much finer, also much less pressure is used as a razor edge is very fragile. Really all you need are a 1, 4, & 8k synthetic razor quality stones.

It pains me to say but all the pictures I see smell of bad. Just as Euclid said you need good stones to do a razor well and not run into these sort of issues. Keep trying I Say try to get your hands on other proven rocks or send them to someone who can. I really hope you figure this out its starting to bug me lol.
