Modine, I found this same hone this morning at an antiques market. Thanks for posting the instructions and everything. Mine is in pretty good shape (although not as nice as the one pictured above in your post). But no chips or gouges, no cuts in the leather either. Yep, this one seems perfect for the bug out bag! I already posted these pics in a different thread but I'll repost them here since they fit with the topic. Apologies if double posting pics is uncouth.

Purchased this mutt on a hunch. Yes we look for signs in our hones, properties, tell. I see rings, I see red, orange and purple in outer rings. The center, well you all can jump in. It definitely isn't homogeneous. I hope that it is little bits of all the best of jnats in a pond. At worst just a hard finisher.
What tells do you all see?Your only as good as your last hone job.

On the hones today a Korrat Golden Dragon full hollow 7/8.

Finally some razor time, touched up a Boker, and 2 W&B specials. Had to set bevel on the 1 Special second from bottom. Touch up on the Franklin on the side. Naniwa 12k ss for touch ups.
2k,5k,8k kuromaku for the 1 Special and finish on naniwa 12k.Nothing is fool proof, to a sufficiently talented fool...

Enjoying a session of honing after dinner, just popped off the Nani 12k, and about to give this W&B and Elliot a slow finish on the Escher & Co, "Barber's Delight", lots of slurry, slowly dilute down to water, and then a two day wait for this shave test.....

Finalot got past the Swiss cheese edge on this Geneva. Proud 6/8 took a great edge.

Just finished shaving, that pic was before it hit the Escher, blade is a bit dirty there....I'll have to wait till the Sun comes up to get a photo, otherwise it'll look like a X-Ray...haha...no light.
Under the loupe, mirror finish on the bevel, but for the shave, was good, but not quite where I like it....thinking I'll hit the strop for a good 100 laps and have a shave test again tomorrow.
If it's not where I like it, figure I'll kill the edge and do over....has to be perfect or go home....

Quick question, and I am sorry that this is perhaps not the place to ask it but it is relevant to the above quote.
I am only on my very first steps of the honing journey and just have a 12k finisher for refreshing my blades.
I just wondered why you kill the edge and is it important to do that? It's just that if I had to do that I would be there a good long while with my 12k trying to get it back.
This is just really a question to Phrank as I really don't want toFact: Opinions are not the same as facts... Well, that's my opinion anyway
