And your honing ability improves.
At least that is what you think!

Friodur on 4K Hayabusa and on 8K Fuji.
The Hayabusa seems to absorb a lot of water. Should I soak it before use?

Thanked: 81My first post to HOTD!
I had some time to play with my coti today, so I refreshed a few razors: Puma Special 89, Osgar 862, Burrell Top Flight, Hoshi Tombo 6000. Shave tested the Top Flight and it was quite keen - the only place where I had a bit of resistance was in the final fools pass.

Decided to do a proper hone on this ti le grelot instead of just touch ups.
Used the petite Blanche and started with slurry on the bbw side and diluted as I went. Switched to the yellow side with more slurry and diluted until just plain water remained. Rinsed blade and stone and did some more plain water. Strop on polyweb and on kangaroo leather after.
Great edge and just the tlc this blade needed.
Also couldn’t resist a coti family picture.

You don’t hear much about the Shapton Glass High Carbon (HC), most everyone uses the uber-fast HR version. The HC is slower, polishes more, and is designed for high carbon knives and razors vs the semi-stainless steel that the HR was designed to cut. Takeshi Aoki once said that he used a HC 6k for everyday razor maintenance, but I only have the 8k.
8k for me has always been the ‘gateway’ for synth razor finishers, you can certainly do it, but a finer stone like the 10-12k Naniwas have always made a smoother edge than most 8k stones. There’s a reason why that Nani 12k is a classic!
But the Shapton HC has a razor rep, can it measure up?
I loaned my Henckels 72 to a friend who wanted to try a stainless razor, so when it came back I refreshed the edge with a Shapton Glass HC 8k, no special technique or super light finishing strokes, just a ho-hum honing session, and shaved with it this morning. How did it do?
Very well indeed, at least as well as the Naniwa 10-12k. Very close, smooth and comfortable shave. If you’re in the market for an 8k stone, especially a finisher, this is one you should give some serious thought to.
Cheers, Steve
