I had a bit of time today, so I did 1K Norton with 5 layers of tape. Rolling X stroke, heel leading.
Here's what it looks like...
It's starting to cut hairs on my ar a tiny bit. I did around 200 strokes.Regards,

Thanked: 1184Sounds and looks like your bringing it around. Might pull 1 layer and see how that goes :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

With 5 layers of tape you are approaching plane and chisel angles. Just saying.

Thanked: 13245Ok
17.8° with all that honewear seems "Off" to me but the results seem to be coming together from those pics
You are working in experimental territory here there are no set rules, but it looks like you are making progress now and not simply chasing the edge any longer..
I would gently kill the edge(Joint, Downstroke, TNT it a few times) and reset the bevel smoothly and carefully and see where you are at..
Then simply continue on with the honing keeping the 5 layers, remember you are really out there, so watch the tape keep it as tight and even as possible and see if you can't get a shaving edge on there ..
Good Luck

Yeah, that is what I'm measuring with the vernier calipers, checking width of blade from spine to edge and averaging (17.32 mm), and checking thickness of spine at several points and averaging (5.36mm). I'm concerned that I'd doing something wrong on the measuring or calculation.
With my tape .177mm thick, I'm adding 1.77mm to the spine thickness, which seems to imply that I'm now at a 23.3 degree angle. I'm concerned that it is too large. Using a clear ruler, with 0.5mm units laid on top of the blade, the bevel is 1.5mm at the toe and 1mm at the heel.
I tried to hold the ruler, with the 1cm mark aligned on the one side of the (rounded) spine, with 5 layers of tape on, and you can see it is around 7mm wide:
Should I be lowering the angle (removing any layers)?

Thanked: 3225From what I have read the blade width calculation should be from the edge to where the hone wear is, including the width of the hone wear. That is usually not the top of the spine but slightly narrower. At least that is what I do using the Excel file on this site http://www.coticule.be/wedges.html to do the calculation.

Thanked: 44If, as Bob said, you are not including the rounded top of the spine in your measurement, then your angle calculation is correct, or close enough. I get 17.6

Definitely a problem with your numbers. I have run them through my honing log spreadsheet, which has the same formula given by GSSIXGUN plus color coded results based on an optimum blade angle of between 16 and 18 degrees. This is what I get:
Note: You can read the numbers better if you open the image in a new window or tab so that it appears full size.Last edited by sqzbxr; 03-10-2016 at 03:19 PM.

Thanked: 13245I think we all agree with the "Fact" that the numbers seem "Off" but the results you are getting, show promise, it looks like you are actually getting close to an edge now..
I would NOT change anything until you attain a shaving sharp edge, you can always tweak in the adjustments of a layer of tape after you get there first..
You have been chasing the edge for quite some time putting in some effort to do so, now as you are finally getting close stick with one plan, adjust later if needed
