If you only had to have one I bet most of the members here with more experience then I have would recommend a Norton 4/8 combo. If you wanted a Belgian Coticule then a natural with the blue being approximately a 4 and the yellow an 8. The natural would be quite a bit more expensive. I really like the Norton 4/8 and from what I have read it is thought by most to be an ideal stone to learn on.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 84It has to be a coticule. Even if you wanted something even finer, you could do a few lapes with a pasted strop after the coticule.

I agree with Marcus here. If you really had to have only one stone to maintain edges that don't need any more serious work, a Belgian combo or even a coticule IMO would be better than a Norton 4000/8000. The 8000 side of that stone can make a shaving edge, but an edge most would say is lacking something.
Or to put it another way, it's a fact that many more people say they're happier with a yellow coticule shaving edge than a Norton 8000 shaving edge.
