Your posts are much appreciated, though I would clarify that I do know how to prepare sencha and matcha.
What I was in doubt over was whether trying to steep loose leaf tea in one cup and then pouring it into a second cup to drink from was a good idea or whether it would most likely end up in a wet and messy disaster.
A tea ball is a good idea but may be too large for using in a cup. Similarly a strainer would, of course, work well but at the point that I'm using a tea strainer at work, I may as well just use a damned teapot!

Slur,
I like your gaiwan more every time I see it, I like the flower print. Is using it getting less messy? Since you posted that it was messy, and I posted that it just took time; I've been making a heck of a mess!! But, I notice I make more of a mess when I use tea that is smaller, like by black teas. I try too hard to keep the leaves in the gaiwan and then the gap to pour from is smaller and the tea runs down the outside of the gaiwan instead of out of it. I guess when I have something working good for me I'll just need to keep my mouth shut and not hex myself!!
Have a great day and great week! donvSilence is Golden, but duct tape is Silver.

You were absolutely right Don.
With time and practice using the gaiwan has become much easier than I thought it would.
Actually, I am only using only this method for brewing my tea for the last 10 days and I really enjoy it.
I totally agree that it is much easier to use big-leave-tea, such as my Oolong and avoid small-leave-teas as my black teas because it is really hard to keep the leaves inside the gaiwan. For this reason I ordered a strainer like this:
