The houjicha is very good. It has a nice deep flavour and is best when you're generous with the leaf. Want to try their kukicha variant next time but still slightly apprehensive about ippodo's shipping charges...

Ok, so I made my first sencha today. I know there is an umami thing going on here but I almost detect a saltiness on the tongue. Very savory. Very much like my favorite sushi place.

I have at agree with you. I tried a slightly shorter ratio of leaf to water, similar to my traditional Chinese ratios and the result was a weaker and less satisfying cup. But for a lowere end tea, Bancha, this is a very nice morning sipper. The shipping is higher than normal but my options don't seem to be much better as I look around the web for Japanese tea. It seems as though I can pay it to Ippodo or someone else. But there are few domestic options.

I believe Den's Tea is the US branch of a japanese tea company. I've heard that their teas are good.

I think ippodo only ships by EMS. Normally, with just tea orders, I stick with airmail because cheaper!

This afternoon's tea is last year's kagoshima sencha okuyutaka from yuuki-cha.com

Yuuki-cha have provided most of my tea for the last few years but of late I've been making an effort to branch out and try teas from various vendors (hence the order from ippodo).

That said, I can particularly recommend trying Yuuki-Cha's kagoshima sencha asatsuyu -- it's one of my favourites so far, and one that I'll normally buy at least once a year.

Thanks for the tips. You would think that finding good online shops for tea would be easier but you usually end up with the same handful of merchants that you're trying to avoid.

It's not that I'm trying to avoid any. Just want to try new things!

Tonight it was Chinese takeout for dinner. A couple of cups of Fujian Oolong to go along.
