Thanked: 90As you may or may not know, Elliette collects single malts the way some women collect cats. I think we have almost half a dozen bottles going at the moment. The one I'm trying tonight is the newest stray she brought home, Ardbeg ten year old, 92 proof. It's very tasty and smooth. It has a real nice warmth to it, as well. She warned me that next time she'd be bringing home the Laphroaig 18.
I tell you, that woman has exceptional taste in everything but men.

I have some Ardbeg 10. It's excellent stuff, non-chill filtered with no caramel added, from the Islay region of Scotland. It is a peat monster, peat being the soil that they burn while the barley used is being malted, giving it it's famous smokey taste. It is similar to Laphroaig.
I love peated whiskies. Many of my friends aren't acquired enough to appreciate them, claiming they are akin to paint stripper!

Nothing fancy here, just the standard glenlivet 12 before calling it a night.

Thanked: 10Sipping Highland Park 12 as I type this. It's good stuff! I had tried an Islay (Bruichladdie "Rocks") and didn't care for it. But my Mackinlay Rare Highland Malt (the "Shackleton" whisky) has a smokiness from Orkney peat that I find agreeable. Since HP is from Orkney, I figured "why not?" and bought a bottle today. Very enjoyable and complex.

Thanked: 10I have some, and it's good. Two bottles, actually. One was purchased online from a vendor in Scotland and is a 700 ml (legal in the UK) bottle. The second was purchased from World of Liquor in Bayway, NJ and is a 750ml bottle. It's funny that the whisky from Scotland arrived in 4 days (ordered on a Monday evening, delivered the following Friday morning to my home in California) while the bottle from NJ took a week and cost a bit over $1 more all told. But since the NJ bottle is 50 ml larger, it's pretty much a wash.
If you don't want to cough up the cash, I've found that Highland Park 12 is similar though not identical.

Thanked: 0Of the 3 big Islay Ardberg sits 2nd with me. Although all 3 are very good I personally prefer Lagavulin. Laphroaig in comparison to both Ardberg and Lagavulin is quite rough, all my opinion of course but it's rare I'll have all 3 in at once and Lagavulin will always have a home with me.

Thanked: 0George Dickel is on my top five, but I've found a great passion in Johnny walker black label,a close number two would be Jameson. Tonight it's the black label, I usually go with a splash of coke to change the flavor but it's straight on the rocks tonight. .

Today I had the pleasure of visiting the Whisky Exchange in London to buy a new malt. They certainly look after you there! Floor to ceiling are bottles of whisky all around the store. I was given several different drams to try, including an independent bottling at cask strength of 34 year old Glen Grant. Awesome stuff! Smooth, creamy with a very strong nose and palette of raisins. Shame it was out of my price range, but I bought a bottle of 16 year old Glenrothes.
