After a few ultimately futile attempts to resurrect my Freshroast SR500, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a Gene Cafe. They are normally stupid expensive here in Canada, but one site had them listed for considerably less than most Canadian vendors, plus they had one discounted further due to a damaged box. After confirming the unit was complete and undamaged, that the warranty was the same, etc., I finally pulled the trigger. So hopefully my involuntary hiatus from roasting will come to an end soon.
Can't wait!
BTW, for anyone looking to try roasting or thinking of moving up from a hot air popper, I can't say enough good things about the Fresh Roast. I had many (5, 6, 7?? can't recall) years of great service from that little thing, and it only died due to a freak soaking thanks to a roofing issue. Damn bad luck on that one... That thing was well worth every penny, and it owes me nothing.
EDIT: I bought the Gene here: https://www.pre-umber.ca/products/ge...coffee-roaster They list it nearly $100 less than most other Canadian sites I've seen.Last edited by Cangooner; 08-09-2018 at 08:52 PM.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

The only negative about the Gene is the chaff collector. Unless they have improved it the top part comes flying off if you look at it too long. Other than that you can get pro results with the actual machine. You just have to factor in a couple minute of cooling time so you don't overdo your roasts.
I've been using one since they first came out around 8 years ago. I'm on my second one.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Let's not fool ourselves here, gentlemen. Reminds me of Stanley from The Office's "Drug Testing" episode when he declares that he enjoys a nice glass of red wine once a week...for the antioxidant benefits (about 3:55 into video although the entire 5 minutes is well worth watching).

Looks like they might have changed that design: the top of the chaff collector snaps on pretty securely. Funnily enough it was shipped with the top loose, and I thought they must not have addressed that problem. But it feels secure now.
Roast #1 worked really well. I started the cooling cycle a bit too early so it wasn't *quite* as dark as I wanted, but otherwise it was just fine. It's much quieter than I expected, which is nice.
Time for roast #2...
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.
