I've looked at the Cafe Gene, I knew someone on here had mentioned it.

When my freshroast finally gave up the ghost after 5-6 years of good service back in the summer, I went for the gene cafe and do not regret it one bit.

The one caveat is that I've been using it outside, but as the temp has started to drop it has shown itself to be pretty sensitive to changes in ambient temperature, so one of my projects is now to get it set up in the basement with the exhaust venting outside. It still totally works, but needs more supervision to extend time as needed.

However, I'm totally happy with it, and the bottom line is it is giving me very evenly roasted batches. And, in the absence of massive ambient temp swings, those roasts are also very consistent.

Plenty of time for some *serious* buyer's remorse to creep in!

Using Mike's metric of value expressed in terms of trips avoided to Starbucks, etc., that would take a looooong time to pay off...

Beautiful looking machine, though.

Innit? For some reason, it reminds me of trains... especially locomotives (if you like "O"-gauge model trains, there's a great series on WHDT, Wednesday evenings, called Steel Wheels; yup, 30 minutes of stunning visuals and informative commentary).

Yup, the home brew coffee coefficient works out to 20$/week CDN as an unofficial justifier of spend avoidance and quality home caffeine generation.

So over a year, $1000 saved up here, or $780 USD once I stopped with the take out coffee.
That roaster would take over a decade to pay off purely in personal avoidance.
Course if selling your wares, exponentially less time involved..

I have a friend who visits Tim Hortons 4 times a day. That works out to about $7/day or about $2500/year. He also smokes cigarettes @ $10/day or $3700/year. We won’t count beer because that’s food.

He could eliminate one vice and one indulgence and pay for that coffee roaster in under 3 years.

Had a minor tragedy chez Cangooner last week when my girlfriend accidentally broke my precious double-walled glass one-piece Bodum press. Tragedy and precious because when I bought it about a dozen years ago, it was already at the end of production. So a direct replacement will be nigh on impossible.

So, I'm thinking of replacing it with this:Espro P7

I like the fact that it's insulated (as was the late Bodum), and I seem to recall someone here had good things to say about the Espro. Did I imagine that??

Any other suggestions for a press that will last the next 12 years?

Since getting into espresso, I found myself using the press less often, but it was great to have that option when the mood struck.

Avoiding Starbucks, or any of the dozens of $5 espresso drive-thrus and cafes littering my city, led me to this wonderful 6000 euro purchase back in 2010. Worth. Every. Euro. Nothing like waking up each and every morning to such an amazing work of art, ready to go. No need to drive anywhere. I savored about 2 double espressos and a double cappa before dare doing anything else to start off the day. For whatever reason, home roasting never appealed to me.
