Thanked: 0Grandpa's Old I-XL
New to this world of straight razors since finding my grandfather's old Wostenholm I-XL. Been reading a ton and now plan to restore it and learn to cut myself with it...I mean shave with it.
It's got some crazy etchings on it (Jewish stars and lots of other images/objects). Scales are in pretty bad shape though and think the blade tip might be broken off...but I've got a beard and wouldn't might a shorter, square-point blade.
Thanks!
Matt

I'd bet those are Masonic symbols on your blade.

Most likely, your razor has the same Masonic symbols.

Hi guys.. I picked up a Wostonholm Pipe razor today at antique shop for next to nothing but I havent been able to find any pics of another razor quite like it. Just figured I'd bounce it off some experts to see if you think its worth polishing up re-scaleing. Its the thinnest one I've seen. The widest place on the blade is about 7/16 and there is a bit of a smile so the tip is around 3/8. There is hone wear so i'm sure it probably started out as a 4/4. The scales are shot but it's a near wedge so I thought, since I don't own a wedge at all right now and it was a pipe, it was probably worth the $3.50. lol. anyway, I'll try to post some pics if that would help. Thanks for any input. -Ryan

ooof. After reading a thread on 3/8 razors I decided to go ahead with a restore.. I'm regretting that decision right about now. My last restore was a dream and now I'm paying for it. This thing is a nightmare. I should have quit when I got into it a bit, but I've got so much time in it now, I can't bring myself too.. The blade itself had the deepest pits I've ever encountered. Nice and polished now but man what a job... The worst thing is that I started on the tail, tang, spine, in that order. When I got to the blade I immediately noticed some tell tale drag marks from one of those draw sharpeners and a few significant flat spots on the edge. I just wanted to bang my head against bench. I figured as I took the blade down a bit to remove pitting it would probably improve the situation, right? Wrong. It looks great now, but I've been trying to set the bevel for an eternity. I'd have no problem letting my six year old shave with it, unsupervised right now. He'd be in no danger. Drag marks are gone but the hone wear is getting pretty bad trying to get through this mess.. thinking of trying a few layers of elec. tape and double beveling it just to help out with that a bit. Anyone ever try this on a tiny wedge before?
