ok so all i did was strop the razor 15ish times and then lathered up and wow. I didn't even do all my normal prep and it was a really good shave. a little odd getting used to the safety bar as this was my first experience with a safety razor but all in all i got a pretty decent shave. this will definitely be my go to for traveling.

Thanked: 375I was given a complete set yesterday to sell. It has a red-ish hard flip top case, instructions, one blade, the hone was not cracked and the leather was original, but a little dry (wiped it down with some neatsfoot). I polished the housing, wiped the case down, sharpened the blade and gave it a soak in some Barbacide. Still have to polish up the inside of it and will probably apply a small amount of grease to the gears. I used my Norton 4/8 doing circles, 12k ss, then ZG (looked good through the eye loupe and popped arm hair). I think I'll give it a try this evening. My personal set is stashed away, I may have to get it out if the honing was a success with this set.

Thanked: 9Just noticed last night that my Rolls's hone has a hairline crack in the middle. Anyone have an extra Rolls (hone) part to sell or part with ? This is why I have a micro chip in the oldest ,1st blade. To the Norton 4/8 it goes!

Thanked: 4My Rolls is here. It came with an extra blade(Super hollow ground) that appeared to have never been used. After sanitizing it, honing and stropping, I actually shaved with it and was surprised at how well it did. The other blade needs some work.
Also including a picture of an Everready SE "Shovel Head" A friend of mine found this at an estate sale and gave it to me. Cleaned up great and shaves great!Enjoying the Shave

The Rolls hones work fine but they're not essential. The pressure-fitted safety guard on the blade will spring off-and-on with a little care not to cut yourself. Fingers will do it or try a tiny screwdriver as a prybar. I put one layer of tape on a blade and hone up a decent one with Norton 4000/8000 stones. Unless the bevel is completely faruuked it's easy to bring them up with circular rubbing; if badly gnawed they get right on a 1,000 about like you'd expect. A 10x loupe tells all.
I've rubbed out some rusted, raggedy, chipped blades on a King 1000 in five or 10 minutes then spent another 20 minutes with a 4/8 and ended up with a perfect shave after 100 laps on the Rolls strop. The strop is what matters once the blade is cleaned up to shave ready; they don't need re-honing that often.
Hope this helps.Last edited by MisterMoo; 04-04-2014 at 03:24 PM.

Thanked: 49Just received my rolls in the mail today. Honed and stropped it a bit nut still had a few really tiny nicks in the blade. So I took the hone out an did some circle strokes and then some x-ish strokes right on the hone right on the table. This seemed to do the trick. Stropped it 50 round trips and gave it a go. Very nice shave. 4 passes. Shallow angle. Still needs some tuning up I think. All in all I really enjoyed it. And it's just pretty darn cool isn't it?
