Ohhhhhtay, Men! My part of this contest's prize is coming together! Got it all pinned up tightly and saved the original top collars.
CA'ing the spacers to the pearl will keep the friction from wearing on the tang. Shined-up and polished a bit. On to the hones!
Finally found info on the patent for this 'blade lock' on the scales. Looks like Torrey bought it and put their twist on it!

Yeah guys lets hear more about American blades!!! I see this thread is mentioned under the contest banner, but there is no link directly from there. Maybe add a link there and we can get some more entries... I have enjoyed what i've read so far so bump bump.
Razor rich, but money poor. I should have diversified into Eschers!

Okay, here goes with one final attempt to get my paws on a Torrey! Since my first post, it has been revealed that the 'tabs' on the razor scales are in fact means to lock the razor in place. Being an intellectual property lawyer and an artist, I must admire and applaud any trader willing to not only improve on a design, but to protect it at the same time. That is one thing that the US outshines any other country on.
So, we know from the scales that the patent was granted on 1 August 1905... But what is the patent number? Well, it took a few hours of research (not least because the USPTO does not allow for title searches going back as far as 1905, and compounded by the patent appearing in the name of Samuel Marvin), but I present to you...
The granted patent:
I have also attached the PDF for those interested to see what the whole patent looks like. It would make an excellent framed picture for above the Torrey owner's collection!Last edited by Suavio; 09-24-2014 at 08:49 AM.

I'm new to straight razor shaving , so can not really say why I think American razors are the best , worst or in between as I only own 1. But I can say that it is a good shaver and out of all of my razors (7 total so far) it is probably ranked as #3 , close to #2.
I am sure that once I get more time shaving that the order will change many times , but as it stands now my US made razor is behind an English and a French blade.

So, from the top of this thread is thebigspendur's criteria for this contest! Thought I would post it down here!
"Well, the summer is drawing to a close with labor day approaching and the end of vacation season. So, either it's back to school or back to the grindstone at work.
We have had many discussions concerning American made razors and how underrated they are. Personally I think Torrey made some of the best. Most of the cutlery outfits in the U.S were located in New York State in the Olean and Little Valley Locales though there were others scattered around the country.
So, in order to win this contest I want you to write a short piece on why you think American made razors were the best. What? you don't think they were? Well, the pox on you then. So in that case write why you think they weren't the best.
All entries will be judged for originality and this is open to everyone (except staff of course) and if you disparage American made razors just be advised we have some real experts on staff who will check your facts-har har.
Oh a prize you say?
Well, if YOU are the winner you will be the proud new owner of:
No that isn't spine wear it has a scalloped spine and there is no frown the edge is dead straight and the razor is shave ready.
We'll let this run until 9/20. Extended until October 01.
Just put your entries in this thread."
More entries, Gents!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.
