Thread: Modified Gold Dollar

Hey Guys,
Just to let you know. Seraphim's GD 200 is about $12 retail in China and Walt's DA 200 is about $6. Not sure if the guys selling these here retail would ship to US, but letting you know the prices. As you can see, the DAs are much cheaper. If Seraphim is right and GD is the old maker of DAs, it could be that the DAs are old stock and as they aren't as good as the GD they are going for cheaper.

I picked up a DA 74 for around $3 on the street the other day, just to grind on it and see what I could do with it. Shoulder is definitely too high to hone it, so had to grind it down. Haven't found the 200s out there yet, but found them online. All Chinese websites though, and had to have SWMBO help me with the translation and searching. I may try to pick up the 200 to see if there is a noticeable improvement in quality.

Btw, if the price is $12 retail, and you tag on shipping, and/or customs and duties if there is any. I think those guys aren't making too much on them. However, if you were buying wholesale, it's a different story.

Yep, I wondered about that "Gold Monkey" as well. Some of the mr.parko ebay offerings have free shipping...but some don't.

Haven't been to Mr. Parko's site, but Gold Monkey is JinHou (Jin=Gold, Hou= short for Houzi= Monkey)... I have seen the Gold Monkeys online, but their numbering system isn't like GD or DA. The GM number I saw was 666. If you're superstitious, maybe not for you. Price was about $2.50- 3.00 retail.

There is another brand, that I have seen called Chaoba. They look better than the others, but that doesn't mean much. I have seen square points and round points in that model and the blade is a heavier than the DAs and GDs. As I said though, that point may be moot.

Here's a Chaoba I saw selling for about $15USD. Scales seemed nicer than the DA 74 that I bought, but I was going for the cheap, tried and tested blade, so I didn't buy it to test it. Also, the DA scales are abysmal, so it isn't saying much. Though, I have yet to see the DA/GD 200.

The GD 200 has the same scales as the "standard" white DAs & GDs, but they have added pigment to give a wood grained look. They popped them out of the same mold, I'm pretty sure.

Interesting that the Shanghai "street" price is about the same as what you can buy them for off of Ebay from Mr Parko. Stamps222 had a good thing going when also selling them for $10 BIN, then he started to jack up his prices...

Just checked out Mr.Parko's ebay site. I haven't seen that Gold Monkey before. However, the GM 666 is similar to the GD 66 that he has. However, the tang is a bit different grind.

The GD 208s run about $6 here retail, so if you get it for about $10-15, it is fair. The GD 100s run about $3-4 retail. Around $10 would be fair. He obviously has money in his shipping, so as long as the bids don't go wild, you guys are getting decent prices.

Yeah, I think the prices are fair if you include shipping and a little profit. I don't think anyone expects people to do something for nothing. Also, my better half is Chinese and I have been here for 6 years, so I don't think we are seeing inflated prices. Also, I am looking at Taobao (the Chinese Ebay), and their pricing is usually a little lower than street prices (though there are exceptions). I think it is accurate to say, these guys aren't doing it to make a living.

That razor looks very similar if not identical to a late model Filly Doble Temple 13 even down to the frosted etch style, the font from what I can tell, etc. Wow. Crazy stuff, man.

Good eye. Quite similar to the one that Classic Shaving is offering. However, some of the older 2 pin or gold etching aren't that similar. I still love that one that Max did a few months back with the black horn. Gorgeous.
