I have so far seen only very few re-scales that have improved the original look. That is my main gripe with re-scales, apart from the fact that quite a few materials, not to mention colours, look distinctly odd on a razor.

There's somethign to preserving the native scales, Robin, but I just got a World Master with black celluloid scales, cracked at the pivot, and, since it's a smooth, round point, with curvy thumbnotch, etc. I think it will look great in Max's smooth, swirly blue Paua. And that material really looks good to me...

    amen to that.

I don't like paua, flourescent or neon colors, or razors that are "extreme" in their style and design.

But I'm always open to be surprised by a new take on things.

My tastes tend to go for the simple stuff. I pulled out all my razors last night to contrast and compare, and they're all either black or white scales, be it horn, wood, ivory, bone or plastic/celluloid. Funny how that worked out, didn't intend to LOL.

Bassguy, This razor was a gift, with broken scales, from my girlfriend's father. He said it was mine if I wanted it -he just thought I collected them... When I said I'd need to rescale it to use it, he said "make it schnazzy". I agree. So, once it's back in Max's stock, this thing is getting some unique scales in Blue Paua that I think will look fantastic

However, This one's unique. I want to get it something REALLY eyecatching (think of the Mastro Livi snake razor. That thing turns heads ) and unique. After that, I'll probably be going with mostly unique materials in traditional (with maybe a few tiny tweaks) shapes

I hate Abalone, it looks like a pyshcedelic mess! Hurts mine eyes!

I'm not a fan of Mamoth bone, and especially stag horn, looks like a hunting accident.

yep I don't like round points either they look very ummm what's the word "effeminate"

I don't like clear acrylic scales, looks like a tool found at the doctors office.

I really cant stand the use of carbon fiber, I know everyone here loves guns, but it's not a firearm!

This is why God made apples and oranges. I love genuine ivory, mammoth ivory, abalone, stag horn and other exotic horns. Celluloid is alright but acrylic is better. I especially like tortoiseshell be it genuine (rare) or acrylic.

Round points are blah but I get good shaves with them. I'm not a big fan of wood but I do have some razors with wooden scales that are quite nice. Spalted maple, bocote and snakewood for example.

Those Duram Duplex razors with the guard and the cream colored scales are the ugliest razors known to man. They remind me of a steel horseshoe crab. Disgusting looking. Granted, they used disposable blades, so maybe that doesn't count in this thread.

We have some true artists here that do amazing work with rescaling. I can appreciate their talent, the work they put into them, etc. I'm also a traditional guy, so I prefer vintage razors in original scales (even if plain black bakelite, etc) but I like looking at what other people are able to do with materials and design.

Theres not much I dont like, but I really dont like excessive hone wear and wide bevels. I really dont like the way it looks and I think it makes a razor look really tired and worn out, even if its still actually a good shaver.

I'm also not that wild on razors with the standard rounded plastic scales. They're not ugly, but I dont find them that interesting to look at...! Plastic is such a versatile material, so I've never understood why makers just stick on bog standard plastic scales, rather than doing different colours or shapes. If I got one, it would be for the blade and it would most likely end up getting rescaled..!

Be careful what you pray for...... you might get it . It is a beautiful beast but in photos you can't tell how large it really is. Here is mine with a standard Dovo 6/8 for comparison.

Beautiful 19C razors with garish bright coloured scales. A bit like putting candy apple metalflake paint on vintage Bentley.
I like razors to be clean and sharp but not over-restored.
