    Default Sunday

I apologize for the late post today gentlemen, but I've been wrestling with approximately 50 student essays. You'll be pleased to hear that the students' essays lost.

    Prep: Hot shower
    Brush:
Rooney 3-1 Faux Tortoise “Super Badger”
    SC:
    T&H “Trafalgar”
    Strop:
VB Red Latigo--50 fabric; 60 leather
    Razor:
    6/8 Wade & Butcher
    Astringent:
    Thayer’s Original Witch Hazel
    ASB:
Chanel for Men (Paris) “Pour Monsieur”
    AS:
    Bvulgari BLV “Pour Homme”
    Result:
    BBS all the way…

I can't help but think that my shave this morning with my W&B--rescaled by Max of course--helped me tackle those student essays without fail. What a shave!

Hmmmm...I am new to Lanolin soaps, but I am fairly sure that MWF is lanolin-based and Cella is the one that's tallow based.

Next, I will be experimenting with mixing Da Bomb with Cella and comparing these...I am really having a lot of fun with mixing and matching. It really keeps one from getting bored with just one...not to mention the fact that there's mysterious angle to this process...one can not know for sure what to expect.

    Robert,

MWF has both lanolin and tallow, if my memory serves me correctly. I really like MWF, despite claims that it is difficult to generate a lather with it in hard water areas. I live in a hard water area and I've never had a problem getting some of the best shaving lather I've ever had with MWF, either by itself or combined with a shaving cream.

There are a lot of tallow based soaps. Cella, old Trumper's, old Penhaligon's, Prairie Creations, etc...There are a lot of vegetable based soaps that have tallow in them as part of the base/as an ingredient as well (DR Harris is one example IIRC). Mitchell's is tallow based with lanolin as a main ingredient from what I'd read everywhere (never actually checked my box).

None of this is as important as the lather that we're talking about, though. Your posts were the first that influenced me to try superlather (and I'm about to try unberlather), whereas before I condescended to it and considered it a practice for inferior products. Well, it definitely isn't! I've mixed Castle Forbes cream with QED Lime soap (both are great) and what I got was even better than what I had expected.

    Monroe,
    Then I humbly stand corrected.

PS: We have very hard water in our area as well and I solved my shaving woes by using "filtered" water...no more lather problems.

You made a very good point. I was under the impression that these things were either Lanolin or Tallow...but, I was wrong. Monroe (aka JHenry) also pointed this out

I think you will like überlather...one thing that makes a HUGE difference is water quality...As mentioned, I use filtered and have no problems...I only mention this because you said that you trouble making lather with MWF (albeit not all the time). Food for thought.

    Happy überlathering .

    Cold Water Shave today
Prep: Cold splash of water on the face (I forgot to rub the lather in and didn't realize it until after the shave)
    Cream: C.O. Bigelow
    Brush: TGN Custom Silvertip Premium
Scuttle: SRD (filled with cold water)
    Razor: Live 6/8
Strop: SRD Premium IV English Bridle (Just got it on Friday and just got it mounted last night)
    After Shave: Master Bay Rum
Process: 1 WTG, 1 XTG. I didn't get to shave today until 3:30pm and I didn't want to get to BBS or else I would miss my morning shave tomorrow.
Result: A Very close, very nice shave. I was so happy to use the SRD Premium IV Bridle strop, what a treat and now it's mine

This has been a busy weekend, I got my new strop, hung a hook in the bathroom for it(I'm planning on doing something like Linacman's strop board, but I haven't had time to do this yet with all the other projects I've been working on), made 5 pairs of scales for a 5 day set I bought that was in rough shape, and cleaned all the rust off of the 5 blades. I just finished putting on my last coat of polyurethane and I get to assemble the razors tomorrow (I'll post pics in the show and tell link when it's all done). You guys inspire me!

    Shave on!!

    Glenn
