Thread: Top DE razors in your opinion

So as the topick states what are your top choices and why?

Mine areranked this way:

1. Muhle R41

• The most efficient razor there is
• relatively cheap
• closest thing to a straight razor there is

2. iKon Slant

• The most comfortable shave there is
• Freakishly expensive

3. Merkur 37C

• One of the most comfortable razors there is
• Way cheaper version of the iKon one

For my skin and beard, based on what I have owned and used, my favorites are:

Mühle/Edwin Jagger 89. I learned on this razor and it still gives me a very smooth, close and comfortable shave. I especially love pairing this head design with Elite Razor handles. Works very well with a wide assortment of DE blades in my experience.

Gillette New Long Comb. So far, it's the only Open Comb that performed well for me. The Parker and Merkur didn't shave as close and the R41 was too harsh. I like how it behaves with the factory handle.

Feather AS-D2. Requires some learning but very efficient for a razor that shaves so smoothly. Only caveat is that it works best for me with Feather blades. Doesn't seem to shine as brightly with my other blades.

For an adjustable, Merkur Progress or a Gillette Slim. I think the Slim is better built and has superior handling but the Progress (IMHO) is the better shaver.

Of the DEs I have used I would say:

1/ The Merkur 37c for comfort, ease of use and a good price point. It shaves almost as close as the Muhle R41 2012 version for me
but is far more relaxing to use. A very balanced razor.

2/ The Muhle R41 2012 version if I want the closest shave to what a straight will give me. Not a relaxing razor to use and I had to
put a Bulldog Stainless steel handle on mine to get a good comfortable grippy handle. So a decent price point went out the
window.

3/ The Gillette Fat Boy which is still a bargain at garage/yard sales here. It has a thicker grippier handle which I like. It is easy to
load being a TTO. You can go from mild to wild with the aggressiveness in one razor. Set at 9 with a feather blade it will do for
me what the Muhle R41 2013 version can. A very versatile razor at a good price point if you look around.

I haven't been able to really figure out my Fatboy yet (and it sure isn't due to a lack of want!), but I just can't seem to go wrong with my Aristocrat.

Merkur Progress (long handle).

A Parker 26C is my most frequently used DE shaver and is not often mentioned. After trying Gillette NEW, Tech, an EJ89 and a couple Muhele, it comes out on top for me.

Close, forgiving shave, feels comfortable in my hand and loots good, too.

although i havnt tried a bunch so far my rankings are
1) Merkur Futur
2) Gillette Slim Adjustable
3) Gillette Super Speed

For me it is hands down the 137C Merkur Slant. I agree with Bob that the Muhle R-41 if I want something equal to a straight razor shave with a super keen blade. I like old Gillettes a lot, from 3 piece old types up through the years to the Red Tip Super Speed and the various Aristocrats. I never have liked the adjustables that much. I've gotten good shaves with them, but I prefer a fixed blade exposure for some unknown reason. The old Barbasol is also one I keep in the cabinet for occasional use. Sort of like the 139C slant in size and weight but a standard head.

For me there aint many DE's I have not tried, most vintage (all Gillette Aristocrats, several slants and most modern Merkur, Ikon, ATT etc.....
My main shaver for well over a year (until switching back to straights 2 months ago was, Gillette British TV superspeed)
