Thanked: 983I started at 24, but with no one to show me what to do, and lacking the requisite knowledge to make a success of it. I had set myself up to fail. I ended up giving up for a long time there, and finally came back to it with a vengence at 38 (in reality a month or so before turning 39). I'm 40 now, and, like so many others I wished I had have been able to get into it so much earlier.

I can't remember exactly, but I think that I was 19 or 20. Like Mick's story, mine was
a disaster initially. However, being a poor university student then, and having been gifted
a SR by someone, I gave it another shot a year later, with greater success, after proper
instruction.
It's been 45 years now, and I must admit that there have been times of trial and error
with various other methods...DE, different types of cartridges, electrics, disposables, etc.
But for the last 16 years, it's been straight razors almost (but not quite) exclusively.
Travelling with straights has been a problem for me: I can't seem to get the "kit" small
enough to be convenient, so I then resort to an old Trak II when "on the go". It's
serviceable, but there's still nothing like a leisurely straight razor shave, with all the
good-feeling, sweet-smelling, decadent accoutrements!

I used a savette for my first shaves when i was 15. Combined with a brush and cream.
After a few months i abandoned the savette and used the Gillette plastic razors for many years, maintaining however the brush and the cream.
Finally at the age of 35 I converted to straight shaving.

At the start of 2010 aged 23. One simple razor has since turned into 50+ in various states of repair! My pride and my burden... :-)
