Love the scales on the Beckher. The blade, scales, pinning and collars look like a Double Duck, the Cracked Ice scales are identical to a Duck, and notorious for cell rot. Hard to tell from the pic, but the blade looks like a duck that has been cleaned up or early cell rot. There are a couple spots near the edge that look questionable.

Bresnick made razors for a lot of folks at the pinnacle of the Little Valley razor production, or I should say had made under his banner, some say Bresnick and later Bresduck did not manufacture any razors but were designers and wholesaler. Either way he produced a lot of fine razors some very ornate and beautiful razors of their time. Unfortunately, precisely because of the elaborately made scales and the unique formulation most did not survive and were consumed by cell rot.

A lot were the fancy scaled and bolstered razors like the Beckher. The steel is the vaulted Little Valley super edge taking steel. Put it on a hone to see if it is still good, it should be, if there is cell rot it has not fully kicked off.

I would keep it separate and keep an eye on it. If it does not kick off it will be a great set of scales, and ducks are shavers.

Judging by the chipped corner on the Ark, I would bet it is a Lilly White old school Washita. I sure would have taken a chance on it, if the price was right. More than enough length for honing a razor.

Hit it with some Oven Cleaner, scrub and rinse in hot water, then a Simple Green or Awesome soak for a day or two.

Not a DE collector but I do use one now and then so I bought this one because I have always thought the adjustment was interesting

Got the Gillette adjustable in today.


You'd think they could have cleaned it up a little but no worries I don't really know exactly how that adjustment works... I mean I know how it functions I just don't know exactly what it translates to in terms of performance. I'll figure it out soon enough though. Don't really shave with a DE much these days. Only really when I'm in a hurry to go somewhere.

Just got the delivery notification and looked at the listing again. In fairness they did disclose that it needed to be cleaned so I guess that's on me for not knowing it.

Not that it matters I've got stuff to clean it with.

Basically, the higher the number the wider the gap and the more aggressive the shave (and possibly more irritating of a shave) start low and work your way up.

I use #5.

Use some Mothers and a tooth brush to clean it up but go easy, you can rub through the plating.

Thanks Roy. I just put a blade in and messed around with the adjustment and can see how it changes the size of the opening at the bottom of the blade. I was wondering about using some 3M Marine on it. With locks that are nickel plated you can't use an abrasive polish on them at all without damaging the plating except for the very old stuff. They probably used a thicker plating back in the 20s and 30s than today. So far I just used some soap and a fingernail brush. This one has a G-4 date code. I was just reading some stuff on a site about them and although it didn't say it it looks as though the date codes G-N correspond with years 61-68 respectively so I guess this one would be late in 1961?

The 4 shows that it was made in the 4th quarter of the year.

Glen's recent posting about double concave grinds got me on the search... found a cheap razor on the 'Bay and was the only bidder. There's rust near the pivot and on the tang, but the edge looks like it's okay. If it ends up a shaver, will be a prime candidate for a rescale project.

This will also be my first American manufactured razor... I've got several that are Solingen imports under American brands...
