Now I have to figure out where to put the hinge hole and make it straight with only a full size battery hand drill!

This is my first attempt at pinning before i buy blanks and make my own scales.

I have a 10z pein ball and a little pin vice drill thing so I reckon I should be able to manage with a bit of advice.

Trace the outline of the scales onto a piece of stiff paper. Make sure you mark where the wedge is. Take your naked blade and position it on the outline. When you are happy with it’s position, mark the location of the hinge hole and transfer that to the actual scale. Drill the hole on one side and use that as a guide to drill through the other.

This is easier to do if the scale kit contains two separate scale pieces since you can work with the flat inside surfaces. I can’t tell from your photo if that is the case with the Maggard kit.

A co pass or divider can help you make sure the hole is centred perfectly.

Drilling a through hole on a door you drill from both sides towards the middle but that means you have to have perfect measurements. I have done it both ways with scales. Going from both sides you have to go through from the second side and rout the through hole. Going straight through you have to have not only the scales but the bit perfectly straight so you don't drift on the outside of the second side.

That is great advice David and I will definately use it when I make my own scales but these are already joined at the wedge so just need drilling and pinning at the hinge, it probably won't be possible to tack the two together at the end to drill through both. It sounds like it would be easy if I could.

Can you explain please Shawn (my apologies Shaun)?

Whats a co pass and how do dividers help, I could get a geometry set from the dollar store with dividers in it.

I didn't even know Beau Dallah was in Australia. I thought you were somewhere in the deep south, although Oz might've been a clue if i was concentrating.

I've got a friend called Richard in Canberra, do you know him?
