The Shapton M5 12k ceramic hone is only about $50 (+/- a few $$) on Amazon. It may not be a Glass series SS, but it will give you a taste of 12k for a fraction of the price. It is my finishing hone, and I am satisfied with it. I don't even have crox or anything for my strop yet.
    Aloha!

I have no Cro-Ox on my strop and never have in decades of stropping. I follow the philosophy that stropping is for ALIGNMENT and not a continuation of honing. Others would disagree with this and that's fine. Whatever works for you works for you. My Stropping was taught to me by my cousin, a professional barber that was 20 years my senior, so he was 38 when I was 18 and he taught me to strop. He emphasized that you sharpen with the stone, you align with the strop. He emphasized that both are very important to achieving a smooth clean shave, but that both served a different purpose.

My typical stropping is 20 passes on leather before my shave. Period. After shaving I do 20 passes on bare linen, then 10 on leather just to assure a dry blade that is in alignment for storage. It was interesting lately to see guys like Howard Schechter having this same philosophy of minimal stropping since so many others go through extensive stropping rituals, as if the strop were indeed a continuation of the honing process. Hey, whatever works for you, go for it!

Like I always say, enjoy shaving any way you wish, but the key is to ENJOY it. Honing takes me quite a while. Stropping I can do in 1 minute.

I agree with a lot of what you say here, recently I've backed way off crox...couple of laps on a lead lined linen smooths the blade after honing - occasionally I'll do a few laps on a sail linen stropping board with some X's marked on it with CROX.

But I've also really backed off excessive stropping - my stropping now is almost identical to your...under a minute prior to a shave, then after, clean up laps on the linen, and then for some laps on the leather...but I don't go through counting out 100-150 laps on leather any longer...I will do some laps on different strops, but no where near what I used to do....great post.

Amazon is both friend and fiend.
Today's it's a friend as this is something only available through aviation supply houses traditionally.

I have a bit of a mystery box enroute, not entirely sure exactly what's coming. I know there are a couple hones, and a couple other items. This will be a great pleasure to receive from a very gracious Gent. I'll share with you when it's in hand.

But I've taken to the coti real well, in my opinion. I'm beginning to think, that stones are like our razors, brushes and soaps.
We each take to a different one that fits our style/preference. And th coti seems to fit me well.

    Thanks Jerry
I feel the same way about my coticules. A coti edge is just right for me personally, for my skin and beard. I do enjoy other edges too, but for me a perfect coticule edge on a thicker grind, slightly smiling blade is sweeeeeeetness.

This is true. I have a really old rock, but a tenth of the size of Tuzi's monster.

I can get a great edge from it, particularly on the really old stuff.

I am just plain lazy. Most all see the 12k.
I toss an Escher finish on some...

I count on the lead strop and a good stropping progression to mellow things out. Just me!

    Lazy!

Monster? All my coticules are pretty much regular sized, which is good because I like to do hand-held honing with them... The only monster hone I have is that huge Norton "axe" hone as they call it. That is a monster.

I knew about the Axe hone! SWEET!

Some reason I thought you had a huge Coti as well.

I am nostalgic for it once in a while.
    Scratched 'Ferrarelli' 4 1/16 x 1 7/8 x 15/16.

Nice to hold in-hand. Jimmy provided a slurry stone.

Much relief after the mail arrived this week.
Couple of shavemac two band knots arrived for the rubberset builds.
On the left, the D01-2 double density bulb, and on the right, a single density 2 band fan.

Both beautifully constructed, and tight bases. The D01-2's always seem to come with transparent base adhesive as opposed to the more traditional looking epoxy base as seen on the right.
Will keep that little distinction in my back pocket for future, purely transparent build ideas.
