The running water trick can work... with a light hand you will feel it stick and then you are done.

The logic is that the edge shaves and only needs a tiny tiny tiny improvement.

The canvas cleans the edge and spine before the leather more than anything else.

It is possible to do an 8k/12k pyramid honing cycle. There is a thread on the pyramid method here.
Thanks for the pointers. Ill give it a go. I know im close now.

And as far as Dr. Matt, hes a little wierd for me but ive watched his vids and have taken notes. He just smiles too damn much and is way too happy for me. JMO.

Yep all the video guys can look odd.
Some exceptions are the folk in the business.

The Dr. Matt advice to use running water was helpfull to me.
Playing with that idea it was obvious how much grit my nagura's were leaving.
Running water and a good wipe helped a lot.
Then just running water and no nagura or flatening...

A hone will slightly dish and will micro bevel with that shallow dishing.
The LAST hone in a progression only... room under a steel rule for one or
two sheets of paper to start.

My first Coti was never lapped for +20 years flat and my razor and it grew
happy together. Never more than five or ten laps on the hone well rinsed
in water. No slurry stone... The dishing after 20 years was not obvious.

Then I lost my strop in a move and then I found this place a new strop and things got
    complicated. RAD, HAD... and more.

I have been dialing back to less complicated... I maintain hone only at
8k or finer. I work hard at my "lathering" because that pays off big time.
I have a DE and 500+ nice blades that work for me to use on my lazy days...

The dog does not care if I shave... ;-)
My razors shave better than they ever did!

    Life is good.
