Thanked: 17I vote yes!!
I do not support the idea of different badges or any public signs for different levels of contribution.
Not everybody has the same financial means. $5.00 may be a lot more than $100.00 to some people.
I believe people who truly want to contribute will send what they can.
Having different badges or acknowledgments may lead to a "who's better then who" situation. I don't think that we need that.

Another no voter here (boo!) but only because I'm not interested in the features. I do value the site though so would be happy to donate through some kind of donation button (I know the thread says the site is currently breaking even but just keep the donations for a rainy day or in case something needs upgrading... I insist! take it! ).

all right, I voted yes as well, because I enjoy the site. I too couldn't care less about the added features mentioned, but i do have some other ideas that I'd like to put forward of things I would get a kick out of. and although we've been assured that it is self-sustaining right now I'll say that my no.1 reason I would contribute would be to maintain it in current iteration.
before my suggestions a couple things:
- I have no problem with special badges. I don't want one, I seek no blessings or fans for something like this. BUT I think it should be an option, because guys that exercise it say SO MUCH about themselves.
- depending on how it works out, sometimes memberships have abilities on a forum that non-members don't. I know of one I'm a non-paying member at and the result is I can't search. I think that hurts the given community as a whole. Many new people to our passtime/craft whatever, come here for information, that's why I started here. it would be tragic if this was in any way hampered. I know it was stated it wouldn't be, but I wanted to say it too.
Things I would like to see:
- More razor porn, larger pictures. clubhotrod (OVERLOADED with ads) has a cool gallery at the top that rotates.
- Make Alex, Joe Chandler, Josh Earl, Max etc. post more pics and make more razors!!!!
- a very nice calendar. some of the pictures here are so well composed and shot it surprises me. I think an end of the year submit and vote thing with a calendar to be produced would be great. yes, there are little online build your own calendar things, but they are never the best quality or the best price. Hot pinups WITH razors would be amazing, then I wouldn't need so many different calendars. I'll think of some ways that could work.
- organized get togethers. i.e. the annual conventions held by so many groups. usually in places like vegas or other easy to get to cheaply locals. maybe because we're such a small group it is every two years.
- free poker room? I'd get into some online texas holdum games.
Imagine this for a convention okay:
Small room with lots of tables, displays by vendors (Masecraft, Tony Miller etc), the big guys too (Dovo). Early entry with no selling allowed for x amount of time so we can see everything. or allow sales but you can't pick up until after the first day displaying. Private poker tournament for members that want to play. dinner with raffle. a couple of workshops showing how to do certain things (the custom gunmakers guild for instance exists almost entirely out of the need to pass on the knowledge of fine gunsmithing). Maybe watching somebody make a razor from start to finish, a set of scales, a class on finishing where a list of materials is sent. you bring the stuff, and in a 2 hour or whatever workshop you get to epoxy coat scales for instance.
And drinks, lots of those.
I would like to see extra monies, i.e. if there were a raffle, to go to a fund for guys that want to start shaving but don't have the money. and not the ones that get on here and whine and boohoo, they just bug me. but we make it something that isn't commonly known so when a new person gets on here they don't know they might get a hand. so for instance, a guy comes on here says he's trying to get going with it, bought or got XXX razor and what next? a small rotating committee of members can get together and decide which of these sounds genuine and in need. they pay for the honing from a certain member, get a practice strop from somewhere else.

I wouldn't worry about refunding someones money if they are banned or decide they don't like it here anymore. If you contribute to public t.v and you decide you don't like the programming anymore do you ask for a refund? Once you donate thats it. It a voluntary thing. If you HAD to pay for membership that's a different story which doesn't apply here.

I wouldn't mind kicking in a few bucks to support the site. This site is like the gift that keeps on giving. An invaluable source of info for us str8 users. I don't blog, I'm not even sure what it is, Is it some kind of digital journal. I don't know that I care what someone did today or ate for breakfast, but a SRP email address might be cool....

Thanked: 335louee,
Aha!! How about like for a "few dollars more" we could get contributors' "greenies" in a different color? Personally, I'm a fan of the color blue. Why I don't know. My eyes are green, my face is red, and my hair is getting to be much too much grey.
I have a few too many razors and am unable to figure out which is the best; I have a few too many hones and am unable to figure out which is the best of the bunch; I have a few too many cakes of soap in a few too many mugs along with a few too many tubes and a few too many tubs of creams and am still unable to figure out which agitates into the best lather; oh, and I have a few too many strops which confuses the issues even further.
So what's a few bucks thrown in, too?
I suppose I should vote, huh? Now if I could only remember the question.

I'll give this thread a couple of days more, and then I will compile a list of different proposals so that we can prioritize, and then check with Dave what is and is not feasible.
We already have the email stuff in place, so that will probably the easiest thing to get going.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Just saw this and voted yes. Not sure my funds at present stretch to it but am interested in some of the features and would consider paying at a later date, or as others have said, just making a donation anyway. Certainly some of the advice I've received here was worth money, and, thinking about it, some of the pleasure as well.
