My opinion is this. I try to stay out of discussions that I know I have a propensity to get irrational in. Some people like to spar, and some people even like to spar with their friends. I would rather just have friends and ignore the obvious differences of opinion.

I think the surest way to loose control of one's self is to get involved in a conversation that tries to change somebody else's mind on Religion and Politics. I am willing to bet that it is here that most people that get banned have crossed a line.

You would think that, but actually it is rather rare, that it happens, the Mods here are pretty fast to shut those down as soon as they start to degrade, we will pull personal attacks, and give people a chance to cool off a bit, and get back on topic instead of after each other persoanally...

This statement from Jimmy is really closest to the truth...

"If upon returning the member continues to stir the pot they in effect cause themselves to get banned."

I have been a Mod here for quite awhile and have never seen anyone banned without a chance to correct themselves...

Geez we even check on questionable spammers, if there is even a glimmer of possibility that they might be a real member, and not just a flyby spammer they even get a second chance...

If trying to change someone's mind on religion and politics got you banned, membership would have dropped 30% by the end of the last presidential election. I'd sure be gone.

Rare that people cross the line or rare that they get banned for it?

Both. Generally, people here try to behave. I know that we are the exception rather than the rule, as far as internet forums go. I like to believe that this is because a) the staff behaves as well, and b) we make it clear that we simply don't want or tolerate rude behavior here.

And Glen is right that Religious and political discussion is generally very civil and well behaved. Consequently, it is very rarely that people get banned because of something they did in the conversation forum. Most problems seem to stem from honing / hones discussions.

Only among razor geeks... We get more heated up about hones than we do about politics or religion.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

It's really not the honing geeks that are the problem. The issues generally come from people who are obviously incompetent yet insist to present themselves as experts for various reasons, every one of them being detrimental to the goals of the forum.
At the end of the day we would like to remain the place where people get objective information and real help, instead of being a pulpit for self-proclaimed self-serving 'experts'.
