+1 on what Jimmy said. I didnt realise how much talking Mods do until I became a Mod myself. None of us act alone, and any banning action we take is always thoroughly discussed before hand. And bans are always the absolute last resort.

The only exception to that is spam, and they get flamed straight away..!

I was recently verbally attacked by a gang of what might as well have been rabid dogs on an airgun forum. I had JUST joined up and was jumped on because they thought I was some guy that had been giving thier forum trouble. Ordinary forum member took it on themselves to be judge and jury, moderators were nowhere to be seen and I was treated terribly. Of course I left, I have no room in my life for that sort of nonsense. Thje moderators finally showed up and tried to tell me this was just "a few bad apples" and please come back etc... I just couldn`t get my head around the fact that some of those forum members felt perfectly at home turning up in that thread, leaving a really nasty post and then leaving. The calibre of man it takes to do something like that certainly doesn`t deserve my company. My point is... THAT is a great example of the chaos that could insue without rules, and more importantly without treating each other as if we were stood face to face. I have already noticed that this forum is chock full of proper gentlemen and that`s why I love this place already
Unfortunatly that`s a rarety on the internet. Imagine if E.T. turned up and judged us on what he found on the internet?! You`ve just got to hope E.T. needs to shave and uses an intergalactic straight razor.... ;D

Feebo, it appears it's the same across the board. This forum I noticed everyone is trying to help you succeed.

I think if E.T. found the site you're talking about, he'd simply say, "ET text home" and he'd be outta here.

In feebo's case, I blame the moderators. Form the story it seems the mods knew the 'bad apples' but refuse (for some reason) to throw them out of the basket. If you do that, then indeed they get the chance to spoil the crop.

Sadly, I don't know the rules on this forum. I am not that concerned about not knowing the rules because as long as I am curteous I feel the rules will protect me rather than ban me.

The Mods do a pretty good job as far as I can tell. Even when a debate gets a bit heated the discussions stay on the ideas rather than devolve into name calling.

I think it was Vinnie Barbarino from Welcome back Kotter that had these wise words: "Yous don't haves to be a jerk your whole life." It is Sweat hog wisdom. If you just follow this simple advice you should be OK in most communities.

Thanks for the information. I get a little concerned sometimes, when someone starts taking exception to something I write. Not necessarily on this forum, but occasionally when I challange the conventional wisdom, the sky starts to fall. I'm glad to know the moderators give warnings.

Actually, we're not all that concerned about protecting the conventional wisdom. You will find that, generally speaking, the SRP community values expanding the knowledge base with solid information. Experimentation is popular here. The best examples of this are probably the honing and restoration areas. If you looked at where we were, even a couple of years ago, and compared it to where we are now you would easily see the growth and development in the conventional wisdom.

What we do care about is that any and all discussions take place in a reasonable and mutually respectful manner. We are very protective of the overall environment here and will do what's necessary to maintain it. That's what our members expect and part of what makes SRP what it is.

+1. We've seen conventional wisdom change over the years. Not so much in the fundamentals, but in honing methods and the use of natural stones, double bevels, etc... most things have advantages and disadvantages.

It is ok to question conventional wisdom by making a case with arguments and supportive data. What is not ok is calling people names or accusing them if they don't agree with you.
