No wonder I dumped Trumper soap
Gentlemen,
Some years back I used Trumper shave soap in the regular rotation. I thought it was a quality soap. Then it disappeared from the shave den. Recently I came across the soap on sale. Since I could not remember the reason for its disappearance from the shave den, I ordered a couple wooden shave bowls of it, a rose and a sandalwood. This week I used both bowls with a variety of brushes, adjusting the water ratio, and almost doing cartwheels to make a half way decent lather.
This stuff, for such a high price soap, is dreadful. The lather is anemic, its texture lumpy, it lacks moisture, and the cushion and glide are nothing to brag about. What a bust! I understand the soap was reformulated. I don't know about that. All I know is that at one time I liked the soap and now find it worthless.
Through the years I have tried many artisan soaps and creams, most of which I have found to be mediocre or not good at all. Trumper is not an artisan soap. This is a prominent name. What's more, I like the Trumper creams. The soap, though — there is nothing to like about this. And for that money? Oy! I have relegated both pucks to the shower, but I am not expecting much from the soap there either.
No wonder I dumped Trumper soap in the first place.

I had the same experience as you, Obie, except that I never got the chance to try the pre-reformulation soaps.
I enjoyed my Eucris shaving soap a lot more as a shower soap and the bowl is pretty nice so at least that's something.

Thanked: 1195Obie,
You're not the first person who has complained about Trumpers soap over the last couple years. My understanding is that they indeed reformulated and not many have been happy with the changes. I was actually at a local brick and mortar store this weekend that sells a wide range of wetshaving product lines (Trumpers, TOBS, DR Harris), and thought that if I was to by Trumpers it would likely be the cream instead of the soap for this very reason. Sorry to hear about your soap going to the shower, but on the bright side I do happen to know that you have several quality back-ups

Right you are, Ryan. I have enough great stuff to make up for this lost cause of a soap. It is astonishing that Trumper would put its coveted brand on this excuse of a shaving soap. But then the world is full of surprises. Oh well, Trumper's soap will stay gone forever from old Obie's shave den. Adios.

I have a tub of their almond cream. It lathers just fine but I always seem to feel that there is no cushion with this one. Every time I use it I feel like I might as well have used some canned goo for all the good it had done me. DR Harris is still my go to soap from that neighborhood. I'm not a fan of any of the big T's.

Same here. I finished a puck of Sandalwood soap in the shower. I liked the scent so it worked OK in that regard. For shaving it is the single worst product I have tried as yet. I was able to get lots of lather but it was light and foamy and broke down faster than I could put it on my face and shave. The nice wood bowl is now occupied by D.R Harris Arlington which I grated and molded to fit.

Gentlemen, I agree with you about the generally mediocre quality of Trumper shaving creams, too. Let's put it this way: they are passable. Once my Trumper creams are gone, too, I doubt they would be replaced. You are also right: there is no comparison between Trumper soaps and creams and those produced by D.R. Harris. I have a wide range of D.R. Harris soaps and creams and they shine in every way.

What strikes me as sad, Obie, is the fact that you're using very expensive soap in the shower. Couldn't you have returned one of them to the vendor or sent Trumper a "nastygram" to complain about the poor quality of their soap?
I'll never buy anything with their name on it.

An excellent point, my friend. Yes, of course, you are right. It is a waste of money. I should have returned the soaps with a big complaint, but I forgot where I bought the bloody things. I also thought of writing Trumper about the poor quality of their soaps, but then I thought it's a big outfit and it couldn't care less about such complaints. To make such a low quality soap, put your name on it and then sell it for a high price tells me they probably would have shrugged off my complaint. I am also with you about having made my last purchase of a Trumper product. There is so much great stuff out there. Who needs Trumper?

Thanked: 60Unfortunately it's the way of the world, reformulated usually means cheaper ingredients.
Trumper is off my list for sure, overpriced mediocre products aimed at folk with money. Thanks for venting...
