Well, back in those days they hadn't invented soap yet. As a matter of fact they hadn't invented the straight yet either. As I recall for my 14th birthday I got a chunk of Obsidian and my Pa told me to chip it into something to shave with.

Unfortunately my friend Moses stole it saying he was going up into the hills and needed something to carve some stone with.

    Gentlemen,

In the early days, along with the Williams soap, and Old Spice, come to think of it, I had some type of a badger brush with a long barber style handle. Eventually, the upper part of the brush handle broke off from the body, leaving the skeleton of the brush. That was my only brush and it was a funny looking thing. Years later, I scratch my head at how much money I have spent on shave soaps and brushes. Ah, but what fun.

Castle Forbes cream (don't remember the scent), but then I found Mike's and Mystic Water and I haven't looked back.

    BermaShave in a can.

Edit: I got it wrong. It's Burma Shave, and it was in a tube.
I think they went out of business in the 60's.

That was my first wet shaving. Guessing my first EVER shave was some goo in a can but no idea what it was. Thinking around 1977.

I do remember I had a cool contraption my sister bought me when I first started shaving.
It was of course with a disposable razor.
But it was made by Gillette I believe. It was a shave brush, built on top of a handle full of soft shave soap. There was a thin, soft tube running up into the bristles. With a turn of the knob in the handle, it would dispense soap into the bristles.

It was a great improvement over goo in a can, but a bit pricey, cause there were no refills for it, you had to buy another once the soap was gone, or the tube rotted off.

    Anyone remember these.?!

    Mike,
I vaguely remember such a contraption, although not sure if I ever used it. So long ago. I'm also not sure what type of soap or cream it would have used.

It reminded me of a soft hand soap. Just a bit thicker, like Baume Be.

I used some brushless cream in a tube for a while back in the 70's. When I started shaving seriously again a few years ago the first soap I used was Sampson's All Natural. That tub is long gone but I will replace it the next time I need to replenish the soap drawer.
