cant remember which was first,, Old Spice puck or the Burma shave, with the lousy Old Spice shave brush. it was so long ago its hard to tell but that's what I used for the longest time come along about 1980, I tried Palmolive and then used it till I got to finding about the good stuff. but the Palmolive was , is good stuff Tc

After ditching the canned goo I got myself a cheap Wilkinson Sword brush and soap, nothing special but I felt like a man. At the time I was in a remote village in Belize with the Army building a school. No amenities and water came from a manual pump. All washing was done in the sea and shaves were with cold water, at 50° heat it was shear bliss.

I started wet shaving a little over a year ago and my first shave soap I used was Van Der Hagen Luxury shave soap.

I need to look around my moms to see if that stash of old spice mugs s still around. I swear every Christmas when the Xmas gifts available in grammar school (70's) us kids bought Old spice gift packs for the old man.


First soap for me was TOBS Sandalwood, still love it.

After getting so tired of not being able to find good soap at my local market, (and because I am a cheap ass bastard) I started making my own with old bar soap from hotel stays and leftovers from around the house. Take the bars and cut them into soap flakes then mix in a heavy zip-lock freezer bag with some coco butter and shampoo. I have added some coconut oil and tea tree oil for fragrance and softness. I mix in the zip-lock bag by pounding it with a hammer and then pressing it into my saving mug.

I think the first canned goo was Gillette Foamy around 1969.
Without a doubt the first puck of shave soap was Williams.

Col. Conk Bay Rum! still have a couple of pucks in the cabinet! Works good, smells good, and price was reasonable!

Unfortunately my friend Moses stole it saying he was going up into the hills and needed something to carve some stone with.

I think Moses may have also needed that obsidian for a little surgery. Ouch!

Oh boy. It was 1970, and I turned 14. Dad gave me a can of Old Scheiss goo. After that was gone I got my first puck of Williams and stuffed it in an old coffee mug. If the mug was running low and I couldn't get to town, I would toss in a chunk of Ivory. Brush was a beat up hand me down synthetic from a great-uncle, razor was my Grampa's straight, and the strop was an old Russian horse hide.
