I have a pair of Bikila's which I used to run in quite frequently but after getting injured, instead of starting out slowly again, I went straight to the Inov-8's and the Bikila's stayed at the back of the cupboard.

I did a 38km trail run in the Drakensburg in May and ran with a mate who wore his Spyridons and he never had a single issue. He continues to run long distance technical trails in them as well as Luna's.

If you want to use them, start off with very short distances (2-3km) and make sure that you shorten your stride and aim to land on your mid to forefoot. Once you are more comfortable build up the distance.

Once the toes are "molded", it becomes extremely easy to slip your toes into the pockets.

I never raced in them so can't comment on that. From a training perspective, my times were pretty much on a par with normal shoes.

30km mountain bike ride today. This ride had a bit of everything. Some paved bike path, some power line access road (double track) and 5 miles of single track through the woods. I came across a deer today too. Lesson learned: On single track the small ring is your friend. My mountain bike has been officially dubbed The Cracker. Not like Ritz cracker or the racial slur for white people but in its traditional use in these parts; Cracker as in a native to Florida or Georgia.

and from the Brooks site themselves...

So, plenty of cushioning but the heel toe drop is only 4mm, which effectively is a minimalist shoe.

My recommendation would be (if you want to keep your Brooks) to shorten your stride and start concentrating on landing in the mid-sole area of your foot. It will take a while to get used to shortening your stride so shorten your run whilst you get used to it or alternatively, get a pair of shoes that have a bigger heel toe drop such as a 6-8mm.

These are my road shoes, Inov-8 X233, a minimalist shoe with a 4mm drop. Far less cushioning than the Pureflow but exactly the same drop.

Edit: Did a 6km trail run this morning.
So they are, though I'm reasonable confident in them. Got them a well respected store here that does a gait analysis before looking at the shoes.

I think my stride may be the thing right now, I have been pushing my limits lately, so my form has likely suffered. I think I'm going to do a few slower runs and try to maintain better form and see if it helps.

Try that and see how it goes.

    Day 1 / 30 - Move challenge

A 35km singlespeed ride on the Surly.

Going to be pretty hard to keep this up for 30 days considering I enjoy my rest days.

Just shy of 30 miles on The Codger. I think 30-35 miles is about the edge of the envelope for this bike. I'm sure the bike could go much farther, but 30-35 miles is about the edge of MY envelope with this bike. In my current condition, 44/20 for 30 miles will in fact make my legs burn and kick me in the butt.

Running starts this week, I'll be running on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, biking on Wednesday and Sunday. The week after next will be three bike rides and two runs.

So I stumbled out of bed a 5:30 this morning, put on the Luna's and did a gentle 3.5k's around the neighbourhood. Lets see how my calves feel later on.
