here I have taken off the wheel guard. It gives more ability to maneuver the scale, and removes the chance of the scale hitting the guard, if the wheel catches it.

It is shiny, but there is a black stain by the tang pin I will hit that with 1000 grit, and the rest of the scale with 2000.

I use 3m auto sp., cut it into fourths, and keep it in a recipe box.
Sand with the grain, and go lightly.

So I went as low as 600 on the back. Still a little stain left. Then hit it with 800, 1000, 2000.
Hit the front just with 2000, except near the tang pin, there was some delamination. Went as low as 800. After getting to 2000 I put a little neetsfoot oil on the 2000 paper, and sanded ever so lightly.
You can see the cleaning has revealed a stress crack at the pin hole.
I am thinking superglue to strengthen that. Any recommendations from the pros?
Now going to hit it with a compound/wax.

Just what I was thinking!
Any idea of how to progress? The horn has been soaked in Neatsfoot oil so it's already 'in' the horn. Could the end of the scale be soaked in alcohol or something, then the 'glue' applied and then the scale be re-soaked in the Neatsfoot oil to refresh it?Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.
