I thought it was a practice run also. I was just wondering if the crack should appear on the 'Real Deal' after it had gone that far in restoration, what would the options be?

In that event with Horn I would try the idea of Alcohol perhaps even a tiny bit of Acetone, to clean away the Wax and the Oil.. At that point in time you really have nothing to lose, as the worst case senario is to build a new set of scales

When you get to the point of drastic measures is when you start really reaching

I was thinking denatured alcohol or acetone and blasting out the crack with compressed air . The air might blow some into the crack and back out giving it a wash.

May blow it to smitherines too !

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

I have filled bug bites on horn scales with CA glue after they had been soaking in neatsfoot for over a week,
I did just that cleaned with a bit of acetone & gave it a quick blow out with the compressor with the scales flat on the bench and let them dry overnight.
then I also mixed a little acetone into the small amount of thin CA glue left in a bottle I used for coating wood scales to make it really thin to try & get into the crevices, only did it last week odd & it seems to have held out so far after sanding & repolishing
the holes where shallow on the inside of the scaled, around the wedge pin in the photo below & along the top edge a couple about1/8 or so wide & deep about 1 third from each end you can just make out
the cracking is like lamination in the length of the horn regards D

This happened in the scale that wasnt the practice scale. If you need to make all new scal3s just go ahead, I figured with the condition odds were against it coming out together anyway with the original. I would rather do all new scales then a repair that may sacrifice strength.

    Thanks for all the input!
This IS the real deal scale.
I will hit the crack with alcohol, then air, then superglue.
I think using a bit larger washer on the pin will reduce the stress. I will also put a washer inside the scale.
I am going to make a full set of scales just in case.

It didnt happen as much as it was discovered. I have to take a closer look, but I think the stress crack is not completely through the scale, just on the inside.
