A break and coming back with a different perspective is good.

Another thing I do is ask a coworker or a friend [such as many I have here!] to look at my problem.

It is very easy to focus on a problem from a specific point of view when the answer is from a slightly different angle.

Many years ago after I'd left the autobody repair business I stopped by my old shop to visit with the guys. The head man (Hugh) was working on a pickup that had been rear ended. The box was off and he'd been making pulls with the frame machine and was very frustrated as his X measurements weren't jiving.

I asked what his reference points were and he was using the center of rivet heads on the frame rails and the center of the hole in the cross member. I took a quick glance and told him that the hole wasn't centered in the cross member.

He grabbed his tape measure and sure enough it wasn't centered. Once he had the actual center of his cross member his measurements were spot on!

He'd wasted about 4 hours trying to figure out what was wrong. So yes, a different perspective or pair of eyes can save a lot of sorrow.

Yes that sounds spot on. In my far out imaginings, sometimes I can get quite myopic. Then one of my friends says "but what about this?"... Blows my mind!
    Lol
So I will be jumping back into a heavy project tomorrow, but for now figured I'd take this apart to clean, assess, and get these tortoise scales soaking before full restoration.

I've been quite surprised by the high level of quality that Simmons Hardware had in their blades and scales.
And not only better than many top brands, but the variety!
    Quality ivory, tortoise, MOP, aluminum..

Thank you all for the words. It's good to be reminded I'm not the first and won't be the last to have a bit of a challenge. I did get it pinned up last night and polished. Murphy's timing was better, he waited until I was removing the tape to let me know I'd done it again. I actually wasn't even that irritated, just put it back on the bench and went to something else. As many of you have said, sometimes it works itself out when your not thinking about it. I've had this itch in the back of my head since it happened the first time. I was trying to get the edge of the pins flush with the collar, so I couldn't feel it. Sometime between going to bed and getting up, the likely solution crawled into my awareness. I've been binge reading this thread and recalled comments about putting a bevel in the collar hole for the pin material to go when peened. Yep no bevel on the collars, as soon as I can't feel the pin it'll no longer hold.

Question: what size bit should I use to add a bevel to the collars? 5/64" or 3/32" a little larger?

I'll be leaving this on the bench for a bit as I want to play with trying to make brass look a little older. I'm not liking the brightness of the new collars with the age spots on the blade. My plan is to run some test solutions on some sheet brass. I'm thinking vinegar, lemon, and some more caustic solutions I have access to at work. I'll post pics when I'm done. I'm also going back to a couple of earlier razors that had some flaws I left because I wanted to get a shave in with them. One is almost done and I'll share in a few days. I'll also put up some stuff about my newly flattened arks; they are as burnished as I think they'll ever be at this point. Just need to take pics and write.

Thanks again for your encouragement and support.

As far as the 'Shiny Brass' goes--it's not clear coated, leave it alone and it will naturally age to a nice mellow color.

True cudaruner, just being impatient I guess. It's also fun to play

Oh, ScoutHickerDad: My household has not always been sane. My oldest is 19 and my youngest is 16, so I'm almost done with the raging hormone phase. Trust me there were days I wasn't sure I would let them make it to their next birthday.

Hehehehe. I had teens in my house that went 13,14,15,16,17. Three girls and two boys plus their friends. Now a days it’s more chill. Mostly it is just the wife and I but they bommerang. We have one at home now, and they have all taken turns.

Jiminy Cricket!!! I've got a 3yr old girl and I'm more than a bit concerned about 10yrs from now.

Damn Rezdog, your a glutton. I love my kids dearly, but more would have been the end of me! One year apart!? Oh, I don't want to imagine. I was an only child, so my hardest thing to understand/accept was the constant arguing over every stupid thing. Thankfully my wife was the youngest of three, and got me to let the stupid stuff go. If blood wasn't shed I had to just let it be. Honestly, helped me understand the way I view the world. Different take when you don't have a sibling rivalry.
