Been working on a couple of tools. Got my hammer customized and made a magnetic blade holder.

I took all of the paint off the hammer, cold blued the head, did a traditional gun stock finish with Formby's "tung oil" to 600 grit, rounded the end of the handle, and did some light stippling near the head for grip. The holder was made from some scrap red oak I had laying around with a Cabernet stain, 1/4" neodymium magnets (6 for $5 at Michael's), and a bit of spray poly. I decided to use painters tape to cover the holder so I can change the tape between grits.

Nice work, Jelly. A strip of thin aluminum has served me well on the jigs. Then, I use the blue tape as well.

That hammer seems just right. Would not catch me using the ball-end, Though!

Funny you say that, Tom, I only peen with the ball end, every time I try to use the flat end of my hammer I hit the scales. Gives me an idea though, I think I may try and thin down the flat end of the hammer...

Are you trying to make a flat rivet or a round one?

    Thanks.
It's a 2 oz, so I need to use a few more taps, but it's easy to control. The ball-end is the only side I've polished. I use the flat side to drive my pins out with a punch, so it gets a few dents.

I use the edge of the flat end. I manipulate the hammer so as to have the edge downward where I am. I can nearly polish the peen (and have!) using the flat side.

Just a mess when I try the ball-side. Tiny hammer, BTW.
    Just me....YMMV

I am going to have to try the flat side of my hammer. I have never used it for peening.

I dunno....All I have ever used? You have to move the hammer around.
Has never been an issue with me.

Just make certain you are using the bottom edge.
