Today's work. I did the rough work and heat treating during the week, and today the final grinding. Again I didn't get to do everything I had wanted to because I had to drive the kids this morning.

This one needs a bit of extra work to straighten the spine line and smooth the tail stub. Other than that it was ready. The holes were a bit of a frivolous idea. I thought it would go well with a round point.

For this one I chose a French point. It has a modest humpback and a sunken thumbnotch. Instead of a moneky tail I made a very thin stub.

This one is based on my regular monkey tail, but more slender and flowing, and longer even.

My standard monkey tail, but with jimps.

Did you make those porcelain pieces? They are really nice, the handles I don't see often in porcelain.

.. what I've been working "today" (give or take a day) is:

    a) I have to make a few wooden rings (I haven't been doing any for a few months) so I just drilled them out (I laminated few days ago,..) thery're going to be wallnut on 1 side, veneer in between and maple, doussie or roxinho on the other, I kind of mad 1 to the 50%, I did't manage to do much because of a "b"

    b) I'f ve bought an ERN Ator some months ago, it had a cracked (and reglued) scale, and was held together with a brass microfasteners hex-head scre.. so I decided I'd try to make a rescale, after some thought I decided to do it in ebony and camel bone, sort of adding a little value to it. Since it has a special form I decided I'll try and make scales lookalike,..
I used a copying machine (that a colleague made for himself) to do a rough outlines of letters, and partly cleaned them today, leaving enough "meat" for final shaping of the letters... it turned out to be a time eater ... I know it doesn't seem much but (and it probably wouldn't be for a trained carver) it took a lot of work..

    ERN Ator (just in case)

copying machine just before starting (actually just calibrated to the highest point)

    ..the result after copying

the result after todays cleaning (as said far from finished)

So, I finally decided to break-down and make scales out of some petrified wood pieces I've had out in the garage getting more petrified. Here they are after securing them to dark horn. More work ahead.
