Thanked: 4827I have some of the Herder scales and they do not fit the 49. It was a lot of fiddling getting the design correct. I am glad that with consultation that everything worked out well. I did make an aluminum template at the same time as I was making this set of scales so roughing another set out with a tracer bit in the router table will be relatively simple.

So I picked up this Westpfal Acme Razor off fleaBay.
It had some lines which looked like they could be cracks...
...but the pics of the other side didn't show them.
It was cheap enough and I combined shipping so I took a chance. After some polish work with a rag an a test hone I can see that they (big one close to the edge mainly) not only don't go through to the other side but the one near the edge doesn't show up in the bevel. I was really hopeful with it. Mainly I just wanted to have Wile E. Coyote's razor.
It didn't take much work and it has a nice, even, narrow bevel so it looks like an easy project to put in the finished category.Last edited by PaulFLUS; 01-08-2021 at 01:35 AM.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot the second part. I gave lapping another go on that giant brick 2 sided razor hone of my Dad's and honed up this razor on it.
I posted a while back about playing around with one stone honing. So I used the SIC powder on a ceramic tile and really went after it. I think I have not been thorough enough for fear of going too far and ruining it. I have no idea how far the abrasive goes before it is just matrix.
Anyway I went from bevel set through to finish between the 2 sides and it passes the HHT, it treetops and it passes the chin stubble dry shave test. It is a preliminary test but I am hopeful that this will be set now to do the one stone honing trial.
We'll find out in the morning.Last edited by PaulFLUS; 01-08-2021 at 03:10 AM.

Sounds like you are describing a cold shut or forging flaw. I find they are common in the old near wedge grinds. I usually find them in the tang and along the spine and sometimes even in the middle of a blade face. I have never found one that runs into the bevel. Here is an example of one of the worst I have found.

[QUOTE=onimaru55;1928195]It's an oddity for sure. Here's the old girl I was talking about.
I would say that is a cold shut.

I thought cold shuts would be peculiar to castings or forge welding. I guess the steel bar could have had the flaw in it prior.
