Finally got back in the shed after a few weeks and made a 3/4 finished a knife sheath on Saturday then while the dye was drying,
I had to work on this 196 Le Grelot P. Hospital & Co which has been calling be for a while
I gave it several soaks in EvapoRust a couple weeks ago, the original scales were a Faux Ivory type material that had shrunk considerably over the years (you can just see about 1mm shrinkage around the wedge alone) & were covered in cracks & blisters and went all stringy & crumbly when wet.
So I started with grey Tripoli polishing bar on cotton buffs but didn't like the finish so then when down to 400 grit compound still no right so then went back to 400 grit on the Belt grinder on my 1" wheel to get rid of the bulk of the pitting etc on the blade face only
the tang and spine is only polishing compound & buffing to maintain their history
the new scales are the 1/8" Masecraft Imitation Ivory
and I found this to be weird stuff to use, in sheet form it is hard & stiff like any acrylic sheet, but when I was wet sanding it became flexible & lost it stiffness, will need to check tonight if it come back stiff when fully dry again so stay tuned
I went with collarless pins for practice and effect & they are 1/16" 416 stainless steel
ready for honing in the next couple of days

The boxes were cut on a 14" Grizzly band saw with a 3/16" blade (basically a 7' tall scroll saw) that belonged to my neighbor. Mr. Harris
passed in 2014 (97 years young) and I didn't have the funds at the time to buy it at the estate sale. Mr. Harris was a wealth of knowledge.

And that brush looks interesting Andrew, cool choice of blue. Very swirly,,

[QUOTE=Hirlau;1666441]Hey Panama, we have something in common!
And the first thing that goes through my mind is how to replicate it. Pooh's shirt, body and box are 3 different woods. Ruff cut,
sand and laminate. General topography on Pooh. Cut bottom off. Cut the "Y" shape lock out. Cut Pooh and upper lid off, scrolling
for the shape of the handle. This leaves 3 layers. Cut the middle layer, starting at the top of the "Y" to get your center blank out.
Slice off the inner lid with handle and cut the remaining blank into 3 parts creating a recess and raised ends. More lamination,
sanding and then the finish. It must have been very relaxing to make. Beautiful box!

My son got the Pooh box as a gift when he was 5 years old from his grandmother. I don't know where she bought it.

Thanked: 4249Just got this horn in the mail today, the plan is to cut a few inches off, and find a good knot to fit, for a long handle brush.
