Thanks! Yes, I have also gone the route of painting in the recesses. With the permanent-type markers, as I made a faux-pas in my painting it was permanent, however. I learned to use water-based markers so I could clean-up my work as best I could.
Then, the clear made them permanent! Worked pretty well for me!

This one was still pretty good in the original colorant dept, so I opted for just the clear.

Thanks 'Tuzi! So It cannot be a monkey with that stubby tail? I reckon it is a critter from AU or Tasmania?
    Perhaps an imaginary species?

I'm thinking Birdseye maple for scales, and finding a box of some sort, to retro fit these for a two day set. This may take me awhile, its getting busy at work again, and doesn't leave me much, me time.
Man, taking most of the notch out of the one would make some Twinkies!
    A 2-razzer box... I have a fixer-upper around here somewhere!

Yeah, it almost looks like it's got little horns on him too. I think he's buddies with your little Red Devil

No need to be so serious all the time, IMO!

Indeed, after it is polished! The upper 'branch' details of the scales would not have survived any sanding/polishing, IMO.
    Too light!
Permanent type markers will not always just wipe or sand off as old dry celluloid soaks it in, at times. Esp darker colors on light cell.
Some will soak it in there so far all the details must come off to be rid of it. JME
