Thanks! Yes, I have also gone the route of painting in the recesses. With the permanent-type markers, as I made a faux-pas in my painting it was permanent, however. I learned to use water-based markers so I could clean-up my work as best I could.
Then, the clear made them permanent! Worked pretty well for me!
This one was still pretty good in the original colorant dept, so I opted for just the clear.

@sharptonn those look great. Metal polish will take sharpie off of celluloid.

Indeed, after it is polished! The upper 'branch' details of the scales would not have survived any sanding/polishing, IMO.
Too light!
Permanent type markers will not always just wipe or sand off as old dry celluloid soaks it in, at times. Esp darker colors on light cell.
Some will soak it in there so far all the details must come off to be rid of it. JME
