Sorry Machine gun Mike, I got sidetracked...........
Great job Brother in Blades!
Very nice work on another razor/box combination Gipson. Both look terrific, and suited to each other. Well done.
Mike, great bleach job bro! Those scales came back better than I would have thought possible. Nice touch buddy.
And sweet looking strop that's gonna be William :tu
I like the draw on my bridal leather quit a bit now that it's worked in..
:beer1:
Scales have been coated, sanded, and are ready to be polished and put back together.

Pinned and ready for honing. Two layers tape and 1000 chosera.
Yeah....the blade is blued till black. Has way too many pits to be glamorous.
So its a stealth razor, cause you dont wanna see it. [emoji38] Attachment 229640
Man! That baking soda/CA is the shizzle, Mike! How on earth did you figure that out?
Got another striper going. A Hessenbruch double-ground full concave. Sweet blade, bummer the bear was stamped light on the back.
The bear is the bomb! ;)

Fits these scales perfectly. In that regard, the Steinbaur I did above is not closing properly. I thinned the wedge to keep the blade proud enough, but the thicker tang has quite a taper to it and as closed, it spreads the scales and the blade wants to poke out the bottom.
If I thin the wedge any more, it is going to be tricky getting it to close center enough. May have to unpin the whole mess and experiment.
Push comes to shove (OR if I go for a 7 day set;)), I have a Henckels 50 and a good fit in reserve.

It ain't easy working on this stuff...Crosseyed and all. :roflmao
Tom I can't swear that it was from this but it 'Might Have Been'

My newest
From the lettering on the blade not obscured by the pitting., a Magnetic
Bought of ebay for $21
Worth it.
I spent some time on the 10k stone and from the speed of working up an edge I think the blade is quite hard.
I am satisfied.
I am not sure about trying to polish out the pitting.
A lot of metal would have to be remmoved.
Attachment 229649Attachment 229650
Thats where it come from alright.
Looks like things had to be changed on this blade. The heavy pits on the spine was causing , wonky bevel syndrome.
So I'm basically refaceing , by honing the whole blade, starting with a 220 Nani. Gonna take awhile, but she seems to be coming around.
Might just become a glamorous blade after all. Only time will tell.
Good thing its a wedge, or I wouldn't even bother wasting the time.

If I may, outback. Send that to me and I shall apply it to wind-chime fodder.
Certainly you have a few decent blades sitting around?
Ain't everything worth fixing. Hope I have not pissed you off. You COULD come down here!
:roflmao
You might be surprised what some Mother's Mag Wheel Polish or MASS or other metal polish can do for that blade!
Start with the metal polish and some well crumpled newspaper (newspaper has a small amount of abrasives) and work the hell out of the blade. However be Careful!
Don't worry about the black just keep reapplying the polish. When you think you've gotten as much off as you can; apply some liquid dish soap to the blade and wash it with hot water. Do try to keep the water out of the scales. Once it feels squeaky clean dry it well and then have a good look and see what you've got.
I always like to start high with little abrasive and work lower as it's hard to get rid of the lower grit scratches.
Let us know how that works for you. :tu
Gawd, I did not read the quote, Roy.
I thought you were referring to outback's blade! :D
I apologize for my behavior!
Nope... Didnt piss me off.
Thats why I bought the thing for in the first place. It was a wedge, and wanted the challenge.
The top of the spine has the worst pitting, and is irrelevant.
Its also why I bought the 220 and 400 Nani's.
You should understand "OUTBACK'S"
Philosophy by now [emoji38]
Attachment 229658
Hi
I have some Mothers and a variety of other abrasives.
I will give it a try after I see how it shaves.
No use putting time in on a bad blade.
Thanks
Well being an OUTBACK you should be more rough around the edges.
I was raised in both worlds. An educated redneck if you will.
I take this moment to applaud and dignify your manner of teaching.
The simple straight forward approach accompanied by the correct pictures and tips (wax paper to not stick CA).
This is but one example.
This type of teaching is similar to a Manual . A true tutorial.
Combined with a concise explanation that a novice could understand.
I was thinking Mike you post more pictures that me of projects.
Then it struck me. These posts will serve to educate for decades into the future.
I spend days in the library here. Your way of sharing is teaching.
How does that go...;.Now get back to work.
Your style is a great asset. I go to school on your posts daily.
That boat engine mechanic background is showing through.
Done on the 220. [emoji27]
Now to the 400.

You can see the cold shot near the spine, in the first pic.
And she lays flat on the stone now.
Attachment 229693
I'm not quite following you outback. What do you mean by the cold shot near the spine?
It's somthing that happens to some blades when their made.
Where the metal cooled or colder than the surrounding metal, and didn't come together properly.
It doesn't effect anything, just resembles a crack.
Here's a pic of another blade I have with a cold shot.
Attachment 229703Attachment 229704
Thanks outback. I've notice this on several fleabay razors and passed them up because I thought they were cracked.
Yes, very similar to crack.
I purchased a Henckels Twin Works "Keene Brothers Hardware" Half Hollow off the Bay a few weeks ago. One scale was cracked in half and there was some heavier rust on the lower rear section of the blade.
Attachment 229695
I under sanded the blade to stay away from the etching. She spent a night in evaporust which i noticed colorizes the interior of the etching and helps it to stand out. Some light pitting remains but shes shiny. This angle is not the best but shows the etching 'Keene Bros Hardware'.
Attachment 229694
I started working on the scales yesterday. Burmese Rosewood, with a black spacer and aluminum liner.
Attachment 229696
Cut, sanded, epoxied. There she sits until tomorrow.
Attachment 229697
Right now they are about 4.5 to 4.8 mm thick on each side. I'm curious as to what anyone's opinions are for the best width. I was going to slowly hand sand the sides down until they looked about right, and make sure they are even with a micrometer. I will be putting a slight taper in the ends as well. Ill take any tips!
Thanks for lookin'!
Have yet to do a set with liners.
But if the wood I'm working with is hard and strong, I typically sand them to the thickness of a popsicle stick.

Hi
I just had a shave with my "New" Magnetic.... WOW!!

Bought this ages ago, but it's been in a box for forever. Anyhow, it's in not such a bad state. So I'm gonna clean it up, hone the blade that's in and try it out. We're away next weekend, so think I'm gonna take it with as my travel razor.
Geek
Had one of those.
Shaved with it a couple times, and gave it to my nephew.
He's into safety razors.
I'm all about the straights, but the rolls is a nice shaver.
Took the blade out and honed it on the Naniwas and stropped it by hand, worked better than the case they come in. JMO, YMMV
Aha. I have learned how to quote in this app.
Yeah it'll be coming out to get an initial honing on my Belgian blue. Think I'll give the internal strop a clean and a go.
I think I have like 3 or 4.
Way I see it I'll never know if it's any good till I try it [emoji12]

Hi
I did not think much of the built in stones and strops.
I have two rols razors.
The first one was ordered without a handle, by mistake. I thought the stone with that one was rough and the strop questionable.
When I ordered the second one the stone was considerably smoother and the strop was made differently,
I have a 10000 grit stone and a strop made from a 3.5" x 15" board with a piece of leather I glued on.
I spent quite a bit of time on the 10k stone with the rolls blades and then some time on my green buffing compound strop, then leather.
I had a pretty good shave with that razor.
I think if the rolls blade was in top condition the built in stones and strops would be OK.
I think probably the early Rolls might be better quality. just a guess.
Good luck
I've finally made it thru 1000grt. on the blade face.
Stopped there, put a layer of tape on and made a few passes to see if the bevel was going to still be wonky.
Attachment 229774Attachment 229775
All looks good !!
Decided I'm going to reblue the blade , as it was before, to match the tang, and spine.
Blued and oiled, will sit over night. Then honed in the morning for Sunday. SOTD
Attachment 229776Attachment 229777
very nicely done
Yep... about 18-20 hours to reface it , using the hones, instead of WD paper.
But it was my only way I could do it, and make sure it was going to be flat on the stone again, when honing. Can't wait to hone it up and give it a go later.
