I would have and did. The mechanism is as solid as a rock. Easy one handed flick opening, and easy one handed closing with the phosphorus thrust washers. That's the key. You can hold something with one hand, easily grab the knife from your pocket with the other. Open it and close it with one hand. I've had my first one for 2 years now and if I lost it id get another in a heartbeat.

From what I've seen, the ivory button was decoration and usually had initials carved into it. Maybe the local club initials, or maybe the owner???
Usually one around an 1 3/4 inches, and on the other side one around an inch. Most of the early lawn bowling balls were Lignum and Ivory. I've also seen Lignum and plastic, and then the more modern ones are henselite.... Whatever that is.
