The work looks good, Baldas. I am with outback on that 1st set, however. There is a reason scads of makers have never used such shapes on the pivot for hundreds of years. A smooth transition from scale to tang is necessary for proper stropping and honing, not to mention shaving.
No worries, though. Lots of guys go out there in design wanting to do something 'new' as they begin to make scales.
They always seem to come around to more common shapes and styles. It will take some time, but I expect you will as well.

Well guys, I've been on a couple time but still having issues with my browser crashing. I did start working on my Wosty shorty & I got one of the scales a little too thin so I'll need to make another piece. Been dealing with some other bs also.
Welcome aboard baldas. I must say, those scales are very interesting. I've never seen anything like 'em...........
Now to call about my computer again.

EDIT: I had to come back & edit my post after wiping out my operating system & reinstalling it. I then saw my computer auto corrected baldas username to blades.
I'll now have to see if my browser stops crashing. It was doing it randomly & not all the time.

    Well, Fellas. I have an admission to make. It seems I was quite condescending in my evaluation of Baldas' (Steve's) scales, posted above, shown below;

Seems my attitude about scales and their design is pathetic.

I cannot see it, but you can bet I was 'sneering' a really good 'I know best' in my comments.

I cannot imagine my not realizing he (Steve) is an adult and knows about design, etc, although I do like his workmanship and attempts at creativity. A Hawaiian war canoe came to mind.

Cannot apologize for my comments, but will apologize for any one's hurt feelings.
Sorry if you got your feelings hurt!

I did recommend instead of hiding down here with honest friends, he should post this work on Custom Builds and Restorations for the kindler, gentler members to peruse.

I will leave my comments here.

Some folks are never able to see a ripping good design in a fabulous material. Sad on them.
The simple banana shape is for losers.

Well, after thinking about it, I still had a piece of cocobolo left from that pair of slabs so I'm going to split that piece & start over again. I had made them exactly flat so I couldn't see how much I was taking from the sides until I noticed one side had gotten too thin. This time I will do the same but will mark them so I can see how far i'm going with them. I had apparently taken too much from one side with my belt sander & I haven't worked with wood enough to make a decent set of scales yet, at least wood. I have always worked with horn or bone. At least now I know that the wood is softer on my belt sander.
Hope it works to this time. I wanted them just a tad wider anyway!

Yo Steve, in a general way I apply this process to all kinds of stuff. When things blow up in my face (and they have, a lot) I say, 'I'm glad that happened, I didn't like the direction that was going anyway.'
