I hope this convinces outback Mike that I am not a slacker.

Great photo BTW, I love the grain of that table. (for real).

Mike, I was doing some grunt work in a woodshop for a little while in upstate New York. This guy was cutting walnut planks for the planer and he cut off that piece because of the extreme figuring and the knot. I asked him if I could have that piece. Sure he says. I've had it with me ever since...that was in about 1995. I call it my 'furniture.' It's about 13" x 8" Been pretty portable...just slipped it in my bindle when I moved down the road.
I lived in a town in NorCal that was known for high grade gunstocks...that wood happened where the fruiting stock was grafted to the root stock...and the trees got big and old. Still nothing like figured walnut on a blued long gun.

I messed with the color...does not look anything like walnut. But realism wasn't that important.

Well I went from no ivory to two razors in ivory in a short period of time. A mk30 and mk31 heljestrand. The mk31 showed up today and is my current undertaking. It has rust and a lil hone wear, but should clean up nicely. It gives me an oppertunity to play with ivory, and if I mess up its not the end of the world because I've only got $35 in it

Progress so far is just disassembly, and it was heart wrenching!

The gunk came off the scales, at least what was on the outsides. So I think I'll just leave them be. I'll try sanding the insides, they are not so pretty near the pin. I also just read an article that says a mild lemon juice rub can whiten lightly stained ivory, but not sure how much that can do.

Sand or scotchbrite some more. It will all mostly come off, I think! Everything looks pretty likely except for the backside of the blade. Looks rough?

Realism is NOT paramount on this thread, Bill!

They are paper thin! I was so scared taking them apart. I was in the zone, steady as a brain surgeon! The blade does have some rust, but I think after I hit it with the 600 grease less it shouldn't be too bad. It's not the deep, cavity inducing rust, it's the surface kind.
