    Default Thoughts?

Just picked up this in a BIN for $45ish(quick trigger pull as a gift!) due to the Army history of the blade.

I didn't see any huge problems upfront, but is there anything I'm missing (I noticed a bit of..pitting or something near the toe, but thought it might be superficial)? Will it be able to be honed pretty easily as is? It'll be my first ebay SR.

    Thanks!Name: 1.jpg

Wow, nice score! can you tell what the engraving on the scales say?
This looks to be a very clean blade to me. As you mentioned there is a bit of pitting at the toe, but very minor.
I havent honed a Heiffor, but see no reason why this one should be difficult.
That is the first set of scales I see which may be blackened honey horn. I was just reading about that this weekend.

The scales aren't original, but they read "Wade and Butcher's Celebrated patent frame back razor which for superiority of temper stands "preeminent to any other manufacturer". Pretty cool.

Thanks for the input! I really like the history of these razors, so I'm happy I didn't make a bad call on this one.

Link to a post in another thread about horn describing the scale making process. Not sure what the materials are they describe to turn them black...

That's a tough one to read (they talked a lot differently back then!) If your head doesn't explode it eventually says they use "...logwood and vitriol." No clue what either are without researching them though. A fun project for someone to figure that out - and maybe try it?

Edit: Sorry - thought I was in a workshop thread. Well if anyone decides to try this, start a thread over in the workshop so we can follow it.

I don't know. It looks like it has had some pitting at the heal that has been cleaned up. Probably not an issue. More concerning is the hone marks about a half inch back from the toe are thicker then the rest of blade. My guess is the blade is warped because the spine matches the edge.

It could be just an uneven grind. Probably a non-issue.
