I started when I was 23 and I am now 24 so a year of experience so far. I wish I had started earlier. I hated shaving. I use to get bumps and burn really badly and when I was in the Navy I had a no-shave chit, meaning I was one of the lucky ones who didn't have to shave for anybody haha. I read that you wouldn't get as much or any irritation when using a straight.
I think maybe it started when my father passed away. He always used a DE, a schick Kronos to be exact. I could never understand how it worked or what blades to put in it. I was truly dumbfounded and so I did as many of our generation do. I googled "Schick Kronos" and it popped up some websites where they sell DE's (where most also consequentially sell straights). After browsing what I believe to have been SRD and AOS websites I saw the straights and was really intrigued. By chance I also happened by an AOS store that same week so I bought a dovo shavette and have been hooked since.
I remember justifying this to my wife as a money saving investment. I have since acquired three straights, three DE's and 7 hones and surely more to come. Of course back when I did use a cartridge razor I would use the same one for months and months. So I think I went from spending some money to a lot of money and for a task I thought was stupid and only required for interviews and dates with the ladies ( atleast the ones that didn't like beards).

Thanked: 485Yeah, Aaron (my son, 23) uses a straight; I taught him. I've also taught Joel, my younger son (15). Aaron especially likes old fashioned stuff. I do think a number of younger people are starting to shun rampant consumerism and go back to the old fashioned way of doing things...
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

i'm still a young guy at 28 and i'm all about straight shaves.
i find that a lot of my peers consider it to be too dangerous and expensive. i will agree that the initial cost is fairly high, but we live in canada, we've got the cash.

i started at 24, now i'm 28 and got into it because my friend started it. the thing i like about straight shaving is that if you undertake the challenge of shaving with a straight it takes a certain type of person to carry through with it and achieve a skill that they can teach to their kids.
usually its the type of people who would give you the clothes off their back if it would make your shaves razor burn free

I have tenants that are hipsters and it seems to me a 7 say growth is the norm. Have yet to see a clean-shaven face. About the same as the bathing schedule
